Temples, historic buildings and a landscape of forests, rocks, grasslands and rivers give Mandsaur its diverse character. Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary encompasses dry deciduous forests, rocky terrain, extensive grasslands and the Chambal River; it extends across the districts of Mandsaur and Neemuch. This means a trip can include both cultural sites and a varied natural landscape. Guided safaris are one way to explore the sanctuary. Families can choose a focus based on their fellow travellers’ interests: nature, religious sites, festival traditions or historic buildings. These themes can be considered different highlights of the trip.

Temples and festival traditions

The Pashupatinath Temple stands on the bank of the Shivna River. The temple’s image has eight heads, a striking detail for travellers interested in culture. The Shahi Swari procession of the god Pashupatinath takes place on the last Monday of Sawan. This date gives the procession a clear place in the annual calendar. Dharmarajeshwar Temple is located in the Mandsaur district of Madhya Pradesh. Mahashivratri is the most important festival in Dharmarajeshwar. As well as temples, named festival traditions can therefore be among the cultural highlights of your trip.

Fort, monument and rock art

Hinglajgarh Fort offers a different historical perspective. It is located in the village of Nawali, in the Bhanpura block of Mandsaur district, Madhya Pradesh, amid the dense forests of Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary. It has four main gates: Patanpol, Surajpol, Katrabol and Mandleshwaripol. The Surajkund reservoir is nearby. The Rani Mahal, Kachahri and Fateh Burj buildings are also located within the fort. The gates, nearby reservoir and buildings each offer their own starting points for exploring Hinglajgarh.

The Vijay Stambh stands in the village of Sondhani, four kilometres south of the district headquarters. The monument commemorates King Yashodharman’s victory over the Huns. Unlike Hinglajgarh, the focus here is on commemorating a victory, while the gates, Surajkund and buildings provide points of reference at the fort. This creates a clear cultural contrast between a monument and a fort complex when choosing what to visit.

The Chaturbhuj Nala rock shelters are also located within Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary. They extend along a five-kilometre route and feature thousands of ancient rock paintings. Here, the landscape has an additional cultural dimension: the rock paintings define the shelters. If you would like to include rock art alongside temples and fort buildings, Chaturbhuj Nala offers another topic to consider when planning your trip. The route is five kilometres long.
