The region's festivals also celebrate food culture and tradition. At the Gata Festival, visitors can sample gata and take part in making it; the program also includes folk music, dances, local crafts and games. The Areni Wine Festival offers wine tastings accompanied by national dances and music. The two events have different focuses: one brings together pastries and hands-on activities, while the other pairs wine with music and dance.

Willow weaving is another regional tradition. In Vayots Dzor, visitors can learn basic weaving techniques. For a cultural focus, museums and historic buildings add to the picture: the Yeghegnadzor Geological Museum holds more than 12,000 artifacts excavated in Vayots Dzor, dating from the 10th to the 17th century. The Jermuk Art Gallery, a branch of the National Gallery of Armenia, displays around 100 paintings and sculptures from 1920 to 1990.

Historic Sites and Routes Through the Region

The Orbelian Caravanserai, also known as the Selim Caravanserai, is located at the Vardenyats Mountain Pass, formerly called Selim Pass, between Nshkhark and Aghnjadzor in Vayots Dzor Province. It is considered Armenia's best-preserved medieval caravanserai. The 13th-century Noravank Monastery stands at the end of the Gnishik Canyon; its complex includes a mausoleum with the tombs of princes from the medieval Orbelian dynasty. Spitakavor Monastery was known as a center of scribal activity in the 14th and 15th centuries.

Vayots Dzor lies along ancient Silk Road routes. The Old Bandit Road connects Gomk and Artavan and follows a route that was probably once part of the Silk Road. It is also part of the Transcaucasian Trail route through Vayots Dzor Province. The region's trail network combines newly built trails with old footpaths. Another hike follows the Gndevank Trail through the Arpa River Canyon, using old footpaths to reach the 10th-century Gndevank Monastery. Visitors can hike to Smbataberd Fortress from Artabuynk and Yeghegis.

Canyons, Wildlife and Thermal Springs

The landscape ranges from rugged, desert-brown mountains and steep rocky cliffs to small lakes, deep narrow canyons, vineyards, pastures, rivers and waterfalls. The Arpa Protected Landscape is home to 885 plant species, 39 mammal species and 190 bird species; 47 plant species are listed as endangered in the Armenian Red Book. The Bezoar Trail is located within the protected area. From two observation points, visitors may be able to spot herds of bezoar goats; safari experiences with local rangers are also available.

Those focusing on Jermuk will find mineral-rich thermal springs there: at the Gallery of Water, the water flows through five spouts at temperatures ranging from 30 to 57 °C. The heart-shaped hot springs are about five kilometers outside the town in the forest. They can be reached on foot in 40 to 60 minutes, crossing several streams. Jermuk Waterfall is also part of the landscape; it flows down from the mountains into the Arpa River. Another hiking option is a short, easy trail from the village of Martiros to a waterfall. Traveling by car or bus from Yerevan to Vayots Dzor takes about two hours.
