Discover São Félix do Tocantins
Accommodation in São Félix do Tocantins
São Félix do Tocantins combines its own festival calendar with natural attractions in the municipality: on December 8, Nossa Senhora Imaculada Conceição is honoured as the patron saint. The celebrations run from November 29 to December 8. If you want to plan your trip around them, check the dates again for the relevant year. The landscape offers everything from riverbanks and waterfalls to a warm, bubbling spring pool.
Protected area, rock formations and river scenery
The Monumento Natural Canyons e Corredeiras do Rio Sono was established by Decree No. 034/2012 on July 2, 2012, and lies entirely within the municipality of São Félix do Tocantins. Its objectives include promoting and regulating the ecotourism and scenic potential of the Rio Soninho, as well as protecting and restoring the landscape and natural remains within its area. Nature conservation and ecotourism are therefore both part of the purpose of this protected area.
Another striking natural feature is the RPPN Catedral do Jalapão, a private natural heritage reserve in the municipality. It covers 325 hectares of protected land; a rock formation resembles a cathedral. The reserve provides facilities for scientific research, outdoor events and ecotourism. The rock formation gives the name a vivid meaning, while the protected area draws attention to nature and the landscape.
Riverbanks, waterfalls and spring pools
Praia Rica and Praia do Alecrim are recreational areas on the banks of the Rio Soninho (Sono), both within the municipality. Other recreational areas include Praia do Arapuá, Cachoeira da Jalapinha and the confluence of the Rio Sono and Rio Novo. Cachoeira do Prata and Cachoeira das Araras are also among the municipality’s attractions. Riverbanks, a confluence and waterfalls offer different ways to shape a trip around the landscape.
The Fervedouros offer something different, too. Fervedouro do Alecrim is a warm, bubbling spring pool: its water comes from springs that emerge through the sand. It is located near the municipal seat of São Félix do Tocantins. Fervedouro Bela Vista, by contrast, is at Chácara Bela Vista in the municipality’s rural area. These attractions add a distinctive spring landscape to the riverbanks and waterfalls. If you plan to visit natural attractions, it is advisable to check current access conditions in advance.
Quilombola culture and local crafts
Povoado do Prata in the municipality is home to a significant cultural heritage: the settlement is described as the remnant of quilombola communities, and visitors can connect directly with the local culture there. Prata is the municipality’s only quilombola community certified by Fundação Cultural Palmares under Ordinance No. 02/2006. For those interested in culture, it offers a different way to experience the municipality than its river and nature attractions.
Capim-dourado also shapes local craftwork. The material is harvested once a year from the municipality’s veredas and made into bags, hats, belts, placemats, headbands, mandalas and boxes. The Associação Comunitária dos Extrativistas, Artesãos e Pequenos Produtores do Povoado do Prata supports the production and marketing of crafts made from capim-dourado and buriti. The variety of items makes the craft tradition tangible without reducing it to a single product.
Choose the right focus for your stay
When looking for a holiday rental in São Félix do Tocantins, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on: would you like to experience the local celebrations, or are the municipality’s natural attractions your priority? This distinction is also useful when planning excursions: many of the water and protected areas mentioned are located within the municipality; Fervedouro do Alecrim is near the municipal seat, while the festival is associated with the town. Choose accommodation to suit your planned stay, and check current access conditions before visiting specific natural attractions. This lets you tailor your stay to your interests in tradition, crafts or landscapes.
