Pium: Rio Javaés, Lakes and Culture

Pium combines river and lake scenery with culture and festival traditions. The Rio Javaés and three named lakes are among the natural attractions in the municipality; a monument at the entrance to town adds a historical touch, while religious celebrations round out the festival calendar. When planning your trip, the first question is whether you want to focus on water, nature or cultural events.

Rio Javaés and Lakes in the Municipality

The Rio Javaés, an important tributary of the Rio Araguaia, runs through the municipality of Pium. The river offers opportunities for sport fishing and boat trips, and swimming in its clear waters is also a popular activity. Lagoa Azul, Lagoa da Pedra and Lagoa Bonita are also among the municipality’s natural attractions. As three distinct lakes, they complement the various activities on the river with separate nature destinations.

History and Festival Calendar

At the entrance to Pium, just beyond the Portal da Cidade, stands the Monumento em Homenagem aos Precursores e ao Fundador do Estado do Tocantins. The bronze statues depict Teotônio Segurado, Trajano Coelho Neto and former governor Siqueira Campos. The monument’s title honors the pioneers and founder of the state of Tocantins.

In December 2021, a Sábado Cultural event was held at Praça dos Garimpeiros. At the time, the square was decorated with Christmas motifs; the event included a stage for performances, a dance floor and stalls serving typical foods.

Celebrations are held annually on July 16 in honor of Nossa Senhora do Carmo, the city’s patron saint. Rodeo celebrations are also an annual tradition in the municipality. For future trips, confirm the dates and program locally.

The past edition of CarnaPium 2026 was announced for February 14–17 at the Espaço de Eventos de Pium. Local, regional and national acts were planned; the edition was intended to promote culture and provide leisure for residents and visitors. Public access was planned for this edition.

Traditions and More Nature Destinations

The traditional Hetohoky ritual of the Iny-Karajá people is considered the most important rite of passage for Iny youth on their way to adulthood. In March 2026, it was held, among other places, in Aldeia Macaúba on Ilha do Bananal in the municipality of Pium. A report published in March 2026 describes how thousands of members of Indigenous communities gathered for Hetohoky. An older municipal tourism description also highlights rock crystal handicrafts as an attraction in the municipality.

Another nature destination is Lago do Mato Verde, 130 km from Pium. An older planning document mentions trails and opportunities for photo safaris there. For summer, it describes driving via the unpaved TO-354; for winter, it describes traveling by boat along the Rio Javaés. Before setting out, check which seasonal route is currently suitable.
