Braúna has several clearly identifiable cultural points of reference: the Icatu Indigenous Territory within the municipality, a large-scale mural at the Estádio Municipal, as well as Praça José Ramos da Silva and the Matriz de São Sebastião. They lead to different themes—from the peoples associated with Icatu to a portrait and local history.

Icatu and its cultural connections

The Icatu Indigenous Territory is located in the municipality of Braúna, in the state of São Paulo, and covers 301 hectares. The peoples associated with the territory are the Kaingang, Terena, Krenak, Guarani Nhandewa and Guarani Kaiowá. Its area and names give the place a distinct geographical and cultural profile. If you would like to include Icatu in your travel plans, one important condition should come first: visits to the Indigenous Territory require an appointment to be made in advance using the contact details provided.

An intercultural project by the Federal Institute of São Paulo (IFSP) with Aldeia Icatu included discussion circles, literary discussion circles, workshops on traditional knowledge, film screenings and technical visits to the village. As part of the project’s history, it adds an example of collaboration with Aldeia to the current geographical information. This should be distinguished from a visit that can be booked by anyone: visits to the territory require an appointment in advance.

Mural, square and Matriz

A large-scale mural by André Luiz Mortari (“Mortari”) and Yuri Evaristo (“Chapa”) is located at the Estádio Municipal “João Ramos da Silva” and celebrates Braúna’s culture. It is inspired by Indigenous tradition and football. A prominent feature of the work is a portrait of Maria Rosa, described as a historical figure associated with Aldeia Icatu. The combination of these themes gives the mural its own place among Braúna’s cultural highlights, without equating it with the territory itself.

Another local point of reference is Praça “José Ramos da Silva”, the square by the Matriz. During its renovation, the original design of the flowerbeds and walkway was preserved. The Matriz de São Sebastião is dedicated to Saint Sebastian. Celebrations marking the anniversary of the municipality of Braúna were held in front of the church; São Sebastião is described as the municipality’s patron saint. The square and church thus represent aspects of the place distinct from the territory and the mural: the square retains its original design, while the Matriz is associated with the municipality’s patron saint.

Getting around and choosing where to stay

SP-425 is an important point of reference for getting around the municipality. Traffic in Braúna is mainly carried by this road, which crosses the municipality and provides the main connection to neighboring municipalities. If Icatu is the focus of your stay, arranging an appointment is a specific step to include in your plans. The mural, square and Matriz are distinct cultural themes to explore in Braúna.

Braúna belongs to the Tietê Vivo tourism region. The region lies in the northwest of the state of São Paulo and comprises 23 municipalities. Its tourism development is based on its natural and cultural features. The region’s profile includes freshwater beaches, fishing spots, rural tourism and events. These themes relate to Tietê Vivo as a whole and add a broader regional context to Braúna’s specific local points of reference. When choosing your holiday rental, you can therefore consider whether Braúna itself or the profile of the entire tourism region will be the deciding factor in your travel plans.
