Eldorado combines the Festa da Melancia with river and natural landscapes throughout the wider municipality. The cultural focus is in town; several natural attractions are within the municipality or in a national park that also extends across it. This lets you tailor your vacation rental search to the focus of your trip: the festival in town, or nature and water in the surrounding area.

Melon Festival and Local Tradition

The Festa da Melancia is considered a tradition in Eldorado and attracts tourists. It is usually held every year on the second weekend of November; the date depends on the harvest. If the festival is to be the focus of your trip, keep this variable timing in mind when planning.

A 2019 report noted that sweets, preserves, liqueurs, and other watermelon products were sold during festival week. Watermelon therefore shaped not only the festival’s name but also the documented range of products on offer. Another historical event date is the 12th Expo Eldorado: it took place in Eldorado from May 13 to 15, 2022.

Paraná and Waterways

On weekends and public holidays, visitors come to the banks of the Paraná in the Porto Morumbi district of the municipality of Eldorado to enjoy leisure activities. The Morumbi district is also home to a beach at the site of the former Porto de Morumbi. Its expansive sandy area defines this stretch of riverbank. The BR-163 and state highways connecting Dourados or Campo Grande are relevant for the journey to Porto Morumbi.

The Rota dos Pioneiros also reflects the region’s connection to water: it is considered Brazil’s largest water trail and is nationally recognized. In Mato Grosso do Sul, it also includes the municipality of Eldorado. This distinguishes a specific recreational spot on the Paraná from a route whose geographic scope extends beyond a single place.

Islands, Birds, and Wetlands

The Parque Nacional de Ilha Grande includes lakes, lagoons, continental floodplains, and around 180 islands and islets; the national park also extends across the municipality of Eldorado. Birdwatching is available in the park, including at Paredão das Araras, a place that provides shelter for numerous birds. Islands and floodplain landscapes are as much a part of the natural scenery here as birdwatching.

Another nature conservation area is the Reserva Particular do Patrimônio Natural Ernesto Vargas Baptista in the municipality of Eldorado. IMASUL classifies it as a “Wetland.” The area serves local and migratory wildlife as a breeding ground, refuge, and source of food. While the national park encompasses a diverse landscape of islands and lagoons, the Reserva’s focus is on its functions for wildlife.

Choose a Vacation Rental Based on Your Travel Plans

When searching for a vacation rental, it helps to distinguish between the town of Eldorado and destinations elsewhere in the municipality. If the Festa da Melancia is your main reason for visiting, look in town and take the harvest-dependent festival date into account. If you’d rather focus your stay on the banks of the Paraná or natural areas, consider Porto Morumbi, the national park, and the Reserva as separate destinations when choosing where to stay.
