Maracaju: Festivals, Linguiça and Agricultural History
Accommodation in Maracaju
Maracaju lies in the Serra de Maracaju region and brings together public squares, festivals and a strong agricultural heritage. The Linguiça Tradicional de Maracaju also shapes the town’s identity: its history goes back to local club activities, and its production differs from that of many other sausages. This gives you a range of themes to explore during your stay—from life in the squares and regional cuisine to agricultural history.
Public Squares and Events
Praça Nestor Pires Barbosa is in the center of Maracaju. The square has a modern children’s playground and an open-air stage used for cultural events and shows. If you’re traveling with children, you can plan to visit the playground together; the stage adds public cultural events as another point of interest. This makes the square an appealing part of your holiday plans for a range of interests.
The Festa de São Sebastião is also held annually in Maracaju. It attracts a large audience from various parts of the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. The festival is therefore especially interesting for travelers who would like to experience a popular event during their stay.
Linguiça and Local Culinary History
The Festa da Linguiça de Maracaju began in 1994 as a project of the Rotary Club de Maracaju. Its aim was to promote and showcase the city’s distinctive specialty. The festival and its featured product also tell a story about the local initiative behind the sausage-making tradition.
The Linguiça Tradicional de Maracaju bears the IG seal, meaning Identificação Geográfica (Geographical Indication). Another distinctive feature is its recipe: it is made by hand with beef rather than pork. If you’re interested in regional foods, this is a specific way in which the specialty differs from what you might usually expect from sausage. The Linguiça and its origins can be a culinary focus of your trip, whether or not you’re also interested in the town’s agricultural themes.
Agriculture and Technical History
Agricultural events are also part of Maracaju’s calendar. Expomara takes place every year during the first week of June as the municipality’s agricultural fair. The 29th edition of Showtec was held in Maracaju on May 19, 20 and 21; it is considered the largest agricultural event in Mato Grosso do Sul. Showtec brings together companies, farmers, researchers, consultants, executives and professionals from the production sector. The event therefore appeals to a broad professional audience from different areas of agricultural production.
If you’re more interested in machinery and its history, you can visit the Museu das Máquinas de Maracaju – ASCOMAR. The collection comprises 40 items, including tractors, agricultural equipment and rare pieces that have been restored or donated. ASCOMAR was founded to collect and preserve old tractors. It was inaugurated in 2005, with ten Dutch and Swiss immigrants as members. The museum complements the perspective offered by fairs and events with a collection focused on agricultural technology itself.
