Jefferson County combines impressive wetlands, natural history discoveries, and a diverse regional history. Those looking for a vacation rental or vacation home as a base can plan their trip according to their own interests: nature observation, historical museums, family-oriented activities, and longer cycling routes.

Wetlands and Protected Natural Areas

The Glacial Heritage Area is a coordinated network of parks, protected areas, wildlife areas, natural areas, and other conservation lands in Jefferson County. Various trails connect these areas. The Zeloski Marsh section of the Lake Mills Wildlife Area offers a special insight into the landscape. Wetlands have been restored there, and water-control impoundments have been created for migrating and nesting waterfowl, shorebirds, and other wetland species. Large areas are planted with plant species of wet to moderately wet prairie.

The Jefferson Marsh Wildlife Area covers approximately 3,000 acres and lies 1 to 3 miles east to southeast of the city of Jefferson. The area consists primarily of a wetland restored in 2005 from agricultural drainage. Open water is found in the south, while a 900-acre tamarack swamp lies in the north. Jefferson Tamarack Swamp has been designated a State Natural Area since 2003, lies within the Jefferson Marsh Wildlife Area, and is considered the largest forested wetland in Jefferson County. It is also an important refuge for numerous bird and animal species.

The Waterloo Wildlife Area also showcases several landscape types across approximately 4,500 acres: open-water marshes, sedge meadows, wetlands, lowland and upland hardwood forests, native prairie, and extensive shrubland. Wildlife-watching opportunities are accessible from numerous parking areas. In the Rose Lake State Natural Area, 480 of the 514 acres of Dorothy Carnes Park belong to an area with significant natural communities, geological formations, and archaeological sites. Dorothy Carnes Park as a whole is a 514-acre nature-focused conservation park.

History and Family Experiences

The Hoard Historical Museum presents the history of the Fort Atkinson region with artifacts from Indigenous peoples, 19th-century tools, ornithological exhibits, and exhibits about the Black Hawk War and the American Civil War. The National Dairy Shrine is dedicated to the history of dairy farming, its significance to culture and industry, and the pioneers of the field.

For families, the museum offers scavenger hunts, a Kids’ Korner, and other family-oriented activities. In the Mysteries of the Mounds Gallery, you can see a replica of a keyhole-shaped pit house and a 17-minute video about earthworks. A separate room is dedicated to the poet Lorine Niedecker. The Dwight Foster House on the museum grounds is the first half-timbered house built in Fort Atkinson. The 1841 Foster House can be visited by prior reservation.
