Lake Mills brings together water, a historic downtown, and natural areas with a range of distinct features. Rock Lake lies within the Town of Lake Mills. The area also has parks along the water, trails, and restoration areas, as well as historic districts that each reveal a different side of the town’s character.

Rock Lake and Experiences on the Water

There are five public boat launches on Rock Lake. Rock Lake Millpond Access is operated by the City of Lake Mills. Sandy Beach and Mill Pond are listed by the City as fee sites at its boat launches. This information helps distinguish between the various places around the lake.

Ferry Park has a swimming area and benches, as well as a boat launch. If you’re interested in activities in the park, you’ll find both a place by the water and somewhere to sit. League volleyball is held at Sandy Beach Park at 345 Sandy Beach Road, Lake Mills, Wisconsin.

Historic Downtown and Townscape

The Lake Mills Downtown Commercial Historic District includes the large Village Commons Park and parts of six city blocks. Together, these blocks make up the historic downtown of Lake Mills. The park and downtown are therefore part of a clearly defined historic district. If you’re interested in local history and the layout of a town center, you’ll find a different perspective here than at the lake and natural areas.

Another district in the historic center is the Mulberry Street Residential Historic District. It includes 11 single-family homes and a church. The two districts therefore differ in their described features: the Downtown Commercial Historic District connects the park with parts of the downtown area, while the Mulberry Street Residential Historic District comprises homes and a church.

South Main Street (WIS 89) also shapes the town center. The tree-lined street runs north to south. Sidewalks and a narrow, landscaped strip along the road are part of its design. This is one specific aspect of the townscape, alongside the historic districts and bodies of water.

Trails, Parks, and Natural Areas

The Glacial Drumlin State Trail is open for hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. The trail is not groomed, and users must share it with snowmobiles. When planning, it’s important to factor in these conditions when choosing an activity, especially if you plan to visit in winter.

Korth County Park has trails, a shelter, and a restroom. The park also includes areas for prairie and wetland restoration. Recreation and the development of these landscapes come together here. If you enjoy spending time outdoors during your stay, you can consider this park as an option in addition to the lake and the State Trail.

Near Lake Mills, Sandhill Station State Campground is about 1 mile south of town on Mud Lake Road. It has 15 campsites accessible only on foot. Also in the surrounding area, the eastern unit of the Lake Mills Wildlife Area includes parts of Rock Lake, Bean Lake, and Mud Lake.
