Index brings together striking rock formations, the rivers of the Skykomish, and an unusually tangible local history. For planning your trip, the question is therefore less about finding a single highlight and more about choosing your preferred daily rhythm: climbing at Town Wall, hiking up to a viewpoint, water sports at River House, or gaining insight into the town’s past. A vacation apartment or vacation home in Index can serve as a base for a wide variety of vacation days.

Climbing at Town Wall

The Stimson Bullitt Climbing Preserve offers climbing opportunities on the rock formations of Town Wall. Index Town Wall has more than 600 climbing routes; only a few are below grade 5.10. Anyone planning a day of climbing should take this focus into account when choosing their activities. The climbing season at Index Town Wall lasts nearly all year.

Lower Town Wall near Index is also part of the town’s climbing history. Washington State Parks has agreed to manage it as a climbing park and preserve permanent public access for climbing there. Peregrine falcons also nest on the cliffs of Index Town Wall. This means that athletic challenge and a remarkable natural detail come together in this place, without requiring them to be combined into a single experience.

Trails, Viewpoints, and River Landscapes

Access to Heybrook Ridge is via the Heybrook County Park Trailhead on the side of the Skykomish River opposite downtown Index. The trail climbs 700 feet over 1.5 miles to a viewpoint. Heybrook Ridge County Park has an accessible parking space and a portable restroom at the trailhead. The exact trail length and elevation gain are important details for planning your day.

Index lies at the confluence of the North Fork and South Fork of the Skykomish River. The Crescent Trail leads through the forest from the town of Index to an unofficial town park on the banks of the North Fork of the Skykomish River. For days on the water, Outdoor Adventures at River House in Index rents whitewater and inflatable kayaks, e-bikes, and rafts. River House is also the meeting point for an introductory rafting tour on the North Fork of the Skykomish River.

History in the Townscape

Index lies along the original route to the gold and silver mines of nearby Monte Cristo. Pioneer Park is home to the saw used to cut granite at Index Quarry in the early 20th century. The Pickett Museum of the Index Historical Society tells the story of the town of Index in greater detail. The summer Index Arts Festival is also held in Pioneer Park.

Historic buildings include Redmen’s Wigwam, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Bush House in Index is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Those who want to learn about the town’s history in more than passing can arrange a historic walking tour of Index for groups of 5 to 12 people with the Index Historical Society upon request; these tours are offered year-round.

Choose Index as Your Base

Index is located one mile north of State Highway 2 at mile marker 35. When looking for accommodation, it is worth deciding on your main focus in advance: climbers can focus on Town Wall, hikers on Heybrook Ridge or the Crescent Trail, while water sports and local history offer additional points of interest. This allows you to align your trip planning with your desired activities without combining the different experiences into an unsupported shared route.

If you are looking for additional places to include in your trip planning, you can find Stanwood, Arlington, Monroe, Lake Stevens, Edmonds, Mountlake Terrace, Everett, and Granite Falls here.
