Chelan: Water, History and Wine
Accommodation in Chelan
Chelan combines waterfront parks and water activities with cultural attractions and wine offerings. You can focus your day on swimming and boating, or include a museum, history, and tastings. When choosing a vacation rental, it helps to decide first what kind of vacation you want: will water and outdoor activities be the main focus, or would you also like to plan for cultural attractions and local food and drink spots?
Waterfront Parks and Water Activities
Don Morse Park offers space for a range of activities: its shoreline is 2,000 feet long, and the park covers 40 acres. You can swim and go boating here. The park has a sandy beach, jet ski and motorboat rentals, and stand-up paddleboard and kayak rentals. It also has tennis, pickleball, and basketball courts. If you want to combine water activities with access to sports courts, Don Morse Park offers both.
Lakeside Park has a different focus. Its amenities include a sandy beach, trails, a playground, and a swimming area. There is a seasonal boat launch for non-motorized boats. If you’re traveling with children, the playground may be a reason to include the park in your day’s plans. The water activity options differ: Don Morse Park has rentals, while Lakeside Park has a seasonal launch for non-motorized boats.
The Green offers another activity: its professional, grass-surface putting course has 18 holes and is located on Lake Chelan. A round on the grass is a distinct option alongside swimming and boating.
History Through a Museum and a Church
The Chelan Museum is housed in a 1907 building that was originally home to the Miners & Merchants Bank. Its exhibits include baskets, clothing, arrowheads, and tools of Native Americans. The building’s history and a variety of collection items come together in one place.
St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church also offers a historical point of reference: it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is considered Chelan’s oldest continuously standing structure. Together, the museum and church offer different ways to explore the town’s history—through a building that once served as a bank and a structure considered particularly old.
Wine Tastings and Regional Cuisine
The Chelan Food Trail is a short loop that can be completed in an afternoon. Tsillan Cellars in Chelan offers tastings in its tasting room or on its outdoor terrace. Lake Chelan Winery offers wine tastings and a vineyard barbecue. These examples give the culinary side of a stay different forms: a short loop, tastings at two locations, or a vineyard barbecue.
The broader regional context is the Lake Chelan AVA. It has more than 40 wineries and 300 acres of vineyards. Wine lovers can distinguish between the specific tasting options named in Chelan and winegrowing as a theme of the wider region.
Start a Hike by Ferry
To start a hike, you can take the Lady of the Lake ferry from Chelan to Stehekin. If this connection fits your day’s plans, check the schedule before your trip. It adds another way to shape your stay alongside the parks and tasting options.
