Terry County combines regional history, water activities and distinctive insights into life on the Texas High Plains. Those choosing a holiday apartment or holiday home in Terry County can shape their trip around different interests: the Terry County Heritage Museum traces the story from Native American culture to the region’s ranching and agricultural heritage, while the Brownfield Family Aquatic Center offers a distinct focus with its range of water activities. The result is a trip that combines culture and shared leisure activities.

History at the Terry County Heritage Museum

The Terry County Heritage Museum is located in the house that Alfred Marion “Dick” Brownfield had built in 1928. The museum also includes Terry County's First Jail. The single-storey building was constructed in 1916 with one room and two steel cells, later moved to the museum site and restored there in 1975. It is located on E. Cardwell St., on the south side between S. B and S. Club streets. These individual sites give regional history specific places and structures instead of presenting it merely as an abstract past.

Brownfield itself is also closely connected to the development of the county: The city was founded in 1903 by developers W. G. Hardin and A. F. Small and is now the county seat of Terry County. Gomez Cemetery offers another historical connection. It was established in 1902 in Gomez, which is considered the first settlement in Terry County. Some of the county’s earliest settlers are buried in the cemetery. Gomez is also considered the first inhabited place in Terry County; it had a post office until 1926 and a school until 1941.

Water, Nature and Regional Highlights

The Brownfield Family Aquatic Center offers several different options for a varied stay. Swimming lanes, a one-metre diving board, the lazy river, a beach-style entry and slides cater to different preferences for a day by the water. You can take this focus into account when choosing the location of your holiday apartment or holiday home without making the trip exclusively about one activity.

Gillham Pond represents another side of Terry County. During migration, the pond seasonally becomes a habitat for ducks and geese. Those who would like to include nature observation in their stay will find a specific seasonal connection here. For wine enthusiasts, Farmhouse Vineyards welcomes visitors to the Whitehouse-Parker tasting room in Brownfield. The Terry County Quilt Trail was established in 2003 and was the first quilt trail in Texas. Together with the annual local attraction Taste of Terry County, these provide further opportunities to include regional culture, crafts and local culinary experiences in trip planning.
