Frio County combines wide-open landscapes with an unusually tangible pioneer history. In southwestern Texas, in the Winter Garden Region, the county stretches across flat to gently rolling plains. The former function of these rooms remains part of their history and should not be confused with present-day accommodation.

Frio Town itself also offers a glimpse into the past: From 1871 to 1886, the town was known as Frio City, and from 1871 to 1883 it was the first county seat of Frio County. Frio Town Cemetery is one of the few surviving tangible reminders of the historic community. The first burials there took place in 1873. Every year, the museum hosts Pioneer Day at the old jail and the relocated Frio Town School. In addition, Frio County holds the Potato Festival every June.
