Grayson combines landscapes along Lake Texoma with a remarkable concentration of nature and history experiences. Eisenhower State Park is located in Grayson County on the shores of Lake Texoma, northwest of Denison. The lake itself is an impoundment of the Red River on the border between Texas and Oklahoma and lies northwest of Sherman-Denison. This gives the region a variety of travel options: nature, trails, and fishing alongside museums, historic architecture, and memorial sites.

Nature Experiences Between the Lake, Wetlands, and Hiking Trails

Those who want to spend time outdoors will find more than nine miles of moderate to easy hiking trails at Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge. The protected area covers 11,320 acres and extends across shallow marshlands, streams, hardwood bottomland forests, wooded uplands, grasslands, and cultivated fields along the Big Mineral Arm of Lake Texoma. These varied landscapes give you several options for planning your day without having to commit to just one type of nature experience.

Fishing is also permitted year-round at Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge. Visitors who want to combine activity and history can also take the Ike Hike. The interpretive trail focuses on Eisenhower’s return to Denison in 1946. Depending on your interests, you can shape your stay around a nature trail, a fishing excursion, or a historical walk.

History in Denison and Sherman

In Denison, the Eisenhower Birthplace State Historic Site showcases the house where Dwight David “Ike” Eisenhower, the 34th president of the United States, was born. Visitors can tour the original 1870s house, where Eisenhower was born on October 14, 1890. The Red River Railroad Museum focuses on railroad artifacts, documents, and visual materials from Denison and North Texas. At the same time, it conveys the importance of the Missouri Kansas Texas Railroad to the founding and growth of Denison.

The Sherman Museum is housed in a historic Carnegie library dating from 1914. Its notable exhibits include three oil paintings on wood by Texas artist James Swann. The works were installed in 1934 and may represent the only example of WPA art in Grayson County. The museum also offers traveling exhibitions for schools, clubs, and organizations, as well as children’s workshops and traveling exhibits.

Historic Homes, Viticulture, and Vibrant Places

Frontier Village & Museum houses 11 of Grayson County’s earliest historic homes and cabins, dating back to the 1840s. It also offers classes in historic craft techniques and living history events. The Vinita House was the home where Thomas Volney Munson raised his family and conducted research that saved the French wine industry. Tours of the historic house are available upon request.

The T.V. Munson Memorial Vineyard continues to grow 65 varieties of the original Munson rootstocks. Tours of the Grayson College vineyards are also available upon request. Alongside nature and local history, these offerings give the trip another focus. The Kidd-Key Auditorium is home to the Sherman Symphony Orchestra year-round and complements the cultural side of the region.

Which Location Suits Your Trip

When choosing a vacation rental or vacation home in Grayson, you can first consider which experiences should define your stay. For days spent in nature, Lake Texoma, Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge, and the hiking trails take center stage. If you prefer historic sites and museums, Denison and Sherman are obvious destinations to include in your travel plans. Downtown Denison combines historic architecture, year-round events, and public art in an area that is easy to explore on foot.

For further orientation, you can also include Sherman, Denison, Whitesboro, Pottsboro, and Gunter in your travel plans. This allows you to connect your search for suitable accommodation with your personal priorities: more landscapes and trails, more local history, or a balanced mix of both.
