Smith combines impressive history with experiences in nature and cultural discoveries around Tyler. Tyler State Park is located north of Tyler in Smith County. The park includes a lake and a landscape that resembles the appearance of the Pineywoods. Those looking for a vacation rental or holiday home in Smith can therefore combine different vacation preferences: active hours outdoors, museum visits and insights into the region’s past.

Nature Experiences at Tyler State Park

Tyler State Park is home to a 64-acre spring-fed lake. Visitors can rent canoes, pedal boats, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and Johnboats there. This selection gives visitors various ways to spend a day on the water.

The landscape itself is also an important part of a visit to the park. More than 200 bird species have been documented in Tyler State Park. The park also preserves a landscape that resembles the appearance of the Pineywoods before changes caused by logging, fire suppression and agriculture. The design and craftsmanship of the Civilian Conservation Corps give Tyler State Park additional historical significance.

Camp Ford and the History of Smith County

During the American Civil War, Camp Ford was the largest Confederate prisoner-of-war camp west of the Mississippi. At its peak in July 1864, more than 5,300 prisoners were held there. Camp Ford Historic Park belongs to Smith County and is managed by the Smith County Historical Society. An information kiosk, a walking trail, interpretive signage and a picnic area complement the historical exploration of the site.

Camp Ford Historic Park is open daily from sunrise to sunset; admission is free. This makes it easy to include a visit in a day trip. If you would like to combine historical topics with a break outdoors, the park offers a clearly defined combination of information, a walk and a picnic area.

Historic Houses, Museums and Rose Culture

The Goodman-LeGrand House dates from 1859. It was the first property in Smith County to be listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is now operated as a museum. The Goodman Museum in Tyler displays original furnishings, photographs and memorabilia from the period beginning in the mid-19th century. Another historic address is the Goodman Home, which was begun by Gallatin Smith as “Bonnie Castle”; since 1960, it has housed the museum of the Smith County Historical Society.

The museum of the Smith County Historical Society is located in the historic rooms of the 1904 Carnegie library building. Permanent and temporary exhibitions convey the history of Smith County. The permanent exhibition "20th Century of Progress" covers the county’s development—from the cultivation of agricultural products and roses to the discovery of oil.

Roses also shape the local character beyond the museum. The Texas Rose Festival was established in October 1933 to promote the rose industry. At the Tyler Municipal Rose Garden, thousands of rose bushes grow across 14 acres, with more than 300 rose varieties and 600 beds. Marvin Methodist Church was the first church in Smith County; the current building was erected in 1890 and is the oldest church in Tyler.

Planning Active and Enjoyable Vacation Days

In Tyler, the Brunson Equestrian Center at Texas Rose Horse Park offers riding lessons. Texas Rose Horse Park also hosts numerous events that are free to the public.
