The Milam County Historical Museum preserves the county’s history from the early Spanish missions and the Texas Revolution through the 20th century. The museum also includes a restored 19th-century log cabin whose furnishings illustrate pioneer life.
Opening hours are an important planning consideration for a museum visit: The Milam County Historical Museum is open to the public Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Milam County Railroad Museum is also open Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There you can see a 900-square-foot diorama of Cameron depicting the city in the 1940s. Another model measures 18 by 40 feet and includes an operating HO-scale model railroad. Artifacts from the early days of railroading in Milam County round out the exhibit.
The Morgan Military Aviation Museum also has a special focus. It explores how pilots and members of the U.S. Air Force were trained during World War II and also presents the duties of support personnel. These included aircraft mechanics, radio technicians, cooks, supply soldiers, and administrative staff.
Rockdale: Theater, Railroads, and Parks
In Rockdale, theater and railroad history come together. The Kay Theater is listed as a “Recorded Texas Historic Landmark.” It hosts special events and weddings, as well as music and theater performances and film screenings. The Burlington Calaboose there is one of four surviving calabooses in Milam County. Sumuel Park has a walking trail and a butterfly garden. Veterans Park features picnic areas, a seasonal municipal swimming pool, a jogging trail, play areas, and lighted tennis courts.
Landscape and Outdoor Excursions
Wilson-Ledbetter Park in Cameron covers 25 acres and offers picnic areas as well as hiking and biking trails. Various wildlife populations give the park a natural character. Sugarloaf Mountain lies near the confluence of the Little River and Brazos River and is covered in red sandstone. Milam County is one of twelve counties in the Brazos Region of the El Camino Real de los Tejas State Trail. Roadside markers also commemorate the history of the San Xavier missions. The mission buildings no longer exist, and the sites cannot be visited. Another historic trace is the Henderson Crossing Bridge, built in 1901 by the George F. King Bridge Company.
