Houston County between Forests, History and Blues

Houston County combines extensive mixed forests of pine and deciduous trees with traces of history, waterscapes and a vibrant culture centered around Crockett. The Mission Tejas State Park on the northern edge of the Davy Crockett National Forest is particularly diverse. It lies roughly halfway between Dallas and Houston and offers both short trails for a manageable excursion and longer routes for a full day in nature.

Forest, Water and Trails in Mission Tejas State Park

Mission Tejas State Park is a good focal point for anyone who wants to get to know Houston County through its landscapes and history. The Nabedache Loop passes the remains of El Camino Real. This historic route ran through the area where the park is located today. Mission San Francisco de los Tejas is also part of the area's history: It was established in 1690 in a Caddo village.

Several trails of different lengths are available for choosing a route. The Karl Lovett Trail is a moderate 0.5-mile trail leading to historic sites. The Tejas Timber Trail, also 0.5 miles long, is designed as an easy walk around the pond and passes several outdoor exhibits. The Weches Run is a moderate, 0.4-mile trail that leads from the Pineywoods uplands through bottomland forests to San Pedro Creek. Even shorter is the easy 0.2-mile Lightning Trail through the pines. There, visitors can see one of the oldest pine trees in the park.

There are also specific destinations for a day by the water. In Mission Tejas State Park, fishing in the pond and at San Pedro Creek is permitted without a fishing license. Those traveling by boat can reach the county boat ramp at Houston County Lake from Crockett via FM 229. It is located about nine miles west of Loop 304. Programs and tours of historic buildings and along El Camino Real must be booked before your visit.

The park's practical facilities also include 15 campsites with electricity and water hookups, as well as two sites with water hookups only. Another nature destination is the Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area. It was established by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1936 and has 56 campsites, including first-come, first-served sites and reservable sites. The 20-mile Four C Trail can be accessed from there.

History and Culture in Crockett

Crockett is well worth a visit for insights into cultural history. The Houston County Visitor Center and Museum has a collection ranging from ox yokes to railroad artifacts. Tools and an old cotton gin on an adjoining property also illustrate a bygone era. The railroad depot in Crockett, built in 1909, later became the Houston County Historical Museum.

The county's architecture also tells stories of the past. The Monroe-Crook House was built in 1854 in the Greek Revival style. Exhibits, workshops for educators, gallery tours and lectures are part of the offerings at the Houston County Visitor Center and Museum. This makes it possible to explore regional history not only through buildings and objects, but also through different forms of interpretation.

Crockett also has a special connection to music history. From the 1940s to the 1960s, the city was part of the Chitlin' Circuit for African American blues musicians. Camp Street Blues features live blues performances, local art, food offerings and family activities. The Camp Street Blues Jam was introduced as an annual event in 2024. Christmas in Crockett was introduced as an annual event as early as 1981.

Another cultural gathering place is the Ritz Theatre. The multipurpose venue has 440 seats and hosts events by the Piney Woods Fine Arts Association, classic films and children's matinees. The Ritz Theatre was built in the 1930s as a venue for performing arts and film screenings.
