Jacob's Well Natural Area offers approximately 3 miles of hiking trails. The main trail to Jacob's Well is approximately 0.25 miles long. Guided tours through the area are offered on Saturday mornings from September through June, weather permitting. Important for your current planning: Swimming at Jacob's Well has been canceled since September 4, 2026, until further notice.
At the Gay Ruby Dahlstrom Nature Preserve in Buda, the Hays County Parks Department protects a 384-acre area. It features just over 3 miles of unpaved hiking trails as well as a 0.75-mile paved, ADA-accessible trail. Reservations are required to visit. The different trail lengths and surfaces help you adjust your day’s plans to your preferred focus without confusing the various destinations with one another.
Karst Canyon Preserve showcases a karst landscape with sinkholes, caves and springs. The area includes Wimberley Bat Cave and also encompasses a section of Dry Cypress Creek. Blue Hole Regional Park also has its own distinctive focus. The 126-acre park includes spring-fed Cypress Creek. Blue Hole has been used as a swimming area for generations. There are 5.5 miles of trails for hiking; the Wimberley Hike and Bike Trail and the Cypress Creek Nature Trail extend beyond the park boundaries.
San Marcos between the river, local history and art
City Park provides access to the San Marcos River. No reservations or admission fees are required to visit the park or use the river. San Marcos maintains more than 2,600 acres of parkland and almost 40 miles of hiking trails. The San Marcos River and the Blanco River flow through the city. At the Meadows Center, historic glass-bottom boats that have been in use there since 1945 offer a detailed view of the natural beauty of Spring Lake and the San Marcos Springs. Guided glass-bottom boat tours as well as guided kayak or SUP tours with transparent kayaks and underwater LED lights are also available.
San Marcos also offers specific points of interest for cultural days. Central Texas Wing is housed in a historic wooden hangar dating from 1943 and contains airworthy historic military aircraft. The LBJ Museum of San Marcos focuses on Lyndon B. Johnson’s student years at what is now Texas State University. The self-guided Mermaid March tour leads to nine seven-foot-tall mermaid statues painted by regional artists. San Marcos Art Center is located in the heart of Downtown San Marcos and supports the city’s arts community.
Historic sites and regional cuisine are also part of trip planning. The 1909 Hays County Courthouse is located in the center of the Downtown Square in San Marcos. The five-acre historic grounds of Skyview Cemetery continue to be maintained and are associated with civil rights icon Mattie Welch. The earliest known burials are those of Mary Kirby in 1895 and Mattie Washington and Annie Hamilton in 1899.
