Falls County combines river landscapes, settlement history, and distinctive buildings to create a destination with many different discoveries. The Brazos River flows through the center of the county, while the rolling Blackland Prairie shapes the landscape’s character. Those looking for a vacation that combines nature, regional history, and culture can bring together a variety of interests here.

Experience the Falls of the Brazos River

The Falls of the Brazos River play a special role. The rapids once formed a natural crossing for travel on the frontier and marked the limit of steamboat traffic on the river in the 19th century. They also served as a landmark for Indigenous groups and early settlers. In 1866, the Brazos River changed course, shifting the falls line to its present location.

Today, a county park extends along both sides of the river at the Falls of the Brazos River. From Marlin, the falls can be reached via FM 712; the park’s east bank of the Brazos River is about 5 miles away. If you would like to visit this part of the river’s history, you can consider Marlin as a starting point when searching for accommodation and include the trip in your day’s plans.

Marlin and the County’s Historic Character

Marlin is home to the Falls County Courthouse, a building in the Art Moderne style. Highlands Mansion is another of the city’s defining historic structures. It was built by B. C. Clark around 1898 to 1900 and was regarded as one of Texas’s showcase properties at the turn of the 20th century. The Falconer Home, built in 1880, originally housed the private Stafford Military Academy for boys.

The Falls County Historical Museum presents exhibits on the cultural, social, and economic contributions that have shaped the region. The grounds of the Old Settlers and Veterans Association also contain a historic log cabin displaying pioneers’ memorabilia. This gives travelers interested in culture access to different chapters of regional history without limiting their visit to a single building.

Churches, Traditions, and Distinctive Local History

The First Baptist Church of Marlin began on April 10, 1852, with ten founding members. The First United Methodist Church of Marlin was completed in 1910 and is still in use. The county’s African American history includes the Marlin Missionary Baptist Church, the county’s earliest African American congregation, and Rev. Nelson T. Denson, who became the county’s first elected Black official in 1882.

There are also places rich in memories outside Marlin. Blue Ridge Baptist Church has held the annual “May Day Singing” since 1887. Only the cemetery and church buildings remain of the historic Stranger community; its sanctuaries were used for semiannual homecoming events. Marlin’s history is also linked to hot mineral water, which enabled the development of a spa town with a bathhouse built in 1895.
