El Paso combines impressive desert landscapes with river floodplains, historic mission sites and museums dedicated to the history of the Southwest. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment in El Paso can tailor their stay to their own interests: nature experiences lead to Hueco Tanks and the Rio Grande, while museums, memorials and the Mission Trail offer cultural insights. Families can also combine active and more relaxed ideas for their days out.

Desert, Rock Art and Unique Nature

At Hueco Tanks State Park and Historic Site, the distinctive geology and rainwater create a refuge for wildlife. Even on the approach, three low mountains rise from the Chihuahuan Desert. More than 200 bird species have been documented there. Another special feature is the rock art, which is associated with at least three cultures and more than 1,500 years of history.

Guided tours explain the park’s natural and cultural history. Important for planning: access to West Mountain, East Mountain and East Spur requires a guided tour. To reach the entrance, follow Hueco Tanks Road, as GPS may show an incorrect route. Anyone planning to visit this park should take these requirements into account when planning their day.

River Trails, Wetlands and Water Activities

Rio Bosque Wetlands Park is a 372-acre park operated by the City of El Paso in southeastern El Paso County near the town of Socorro, Texas. Its western boundary runs parallel to the Rio Grande, which forms the international border between the United States and Mexico in this area. Restoration work supports native plant communities of the river valley.

Three loop trails of different lengths are available for walks: the 0.6-mile Bosque Trail, the 1.5-mile Wetland Trail and the 2.4-mile Rio Trail. The University of Texas at El Paso offers free guided walks there twice a month. The approximately five-mile paved Rio Grande River Trail runs between Vinton and Canutillo along the Rio Grande. The approximately eight-foot-wide multi-use trail is suitable for walking, running and cycling and offers views of the riverbank.

Ascarate Park includes a 48-acre lake. Visitors may bring their own kayaks and boats; only trolling motors are permitted there. In addition, Ascarate Golf Course offers a 27-hole facility opened in 1955, as well as the short nine-hole course “DELTA 9”. Ascarate Pool includes a 50-meter, competition-ready Olympic-size outdoor pool. At El Paso Zoo, the Copper Canyon Challenge extends over three floors as a ropes climbing course.

Missions, Museums and Regional History

The historic El Paso Mission Trail is nine miles long and connects Ysleta, Socorro and San Elizario. It forms part of the larger El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro National Historic Trail. Ysleta Mission represents more than 300 years of Texas history. Today’s Socorro Mission was dedicated in 1843 and features approximately six-foot-thick adobe walls and massive vigas. San Elizario Presidio Chapel was built in 1877 in the traditional Spanish mission style and features rounded-arch arcades and gold-adorned pillars. Through Mission Trail Experience Tours, you can book a self-guided or guided tour.

El Paso Museum of Archaeology presents 14,000 years of prehistory from the El Paso region, the broader Southwest and northern Mexico. Dioramas and exhibitions explore the lives of Indigenous peoples of the Americas and their material culture. El Paso Museum of History presents more than 1,000 years of regional history; highlights include an interactive digital wall that is one of only a few of its kind worldwide.

Chamizal National Memorial commemorates the peaceful settlement of an international border dispute between El Paso and Ciudad Juárez in Mexico. Its covered, 500-seat theater is used for plays, musicals, modern dance, opera, folkloric ballet, film screenings, lectures and discussions. A Sun Metro stop at the corner of Paisano Drive and South San Marcial Street is within convenient walking distance of the Memorial’s facilities. Magoffin Home remains closed for restoration work until 2027, while the visitor center is open.

Which Accommodation Suits Your Travel Plans

When searching for a holiday apartment in El Paso, you can consider the focus of your trip: nature enthusiasts can plan visits to Hueco Tanks, Rio Bosque Wetlands Park or the Rio Grande River Trail, while culture travelers can choose museums, missions and Chamizal National Memorial. For active days at the lake, on the golf course or in the swimming pool, a different itinerary may be suitable.
