El Paso: Culture, History, and Trails Through the Desert Landscape
Accommodation in El Paso
El Paso offers an unusual combination of regional history, cultural institutions, and vast landscapes. Families and other travelers can choose between museums, historical topics, and active days in Franklin Mountains State Park or along the Rio Grande.
Museums and Historical Topics in El Paso
The El Paso Museum of History presents more than 1,000 years of regional history in El Paso’s Downtown Arts District. A particular attraction of the museum is an interactive digital wall that is the only one of its kind in the United States and one of four worldwide. Those who want to learn about history not only through individual dates but also through regional developments will find a distinctive focus here when planning their trip.
The El Paso Museum of Archaeology is dedicated to presenting, interpreting, and preserving archaeological and anthropological artifacts. Its focus is on the prehistory and culture of the El Paso area and the Southwest. The museum opened in October 1977 as the Wilderness Park Museum in the 17-acre Wilderness Park. Programs at Wilderness Park also raise awareness of protecting the sensitive ecosystem of the Chihuahuan Desert.
The Chamizal National Memorial commemorates the amicable resolution of a 100-year border dispute between the United States and Mexico. At the same time, the memorial provides a green space in the heart of El Paso. Visitors can also experience a theatrical performance there, such as Ballet Folklórico. The El Paso Mission Trail is a nine-mile route from Ysleta via Socorro to San Elizario and forms part of El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro. It was designated a National Historic Trail in 2000. Ysleta Mission is considered the oldest continuously active parish in the state of Texas.
Hiking, Cycling, and Experiencing the Landscape
Franklin Mountains State Park offers picnic areas for day trips and campsites for overnight stays. Trailheads in El Paso serve as access points to the park’s extensive network of natural trails. In total, Franklin Mountains State Park has more than 100 miles of trails for hiking or cycling. Guided hikes, cycling tours, and Arts-in-the-Parks activities are also offered.
There are various documented trail profiles for different requirements. The Lost Dog Trails in western El Paso offer varied terrain with scenic and technically challenging sections. The Rio Grande Riverpark and Trail System is approximately 21 miles long and takes around six hours. The route is suitable for birdwatching, walking, or cycling. Take these differences into account when planning your day, especially if your travel group includes people with different interests or of different ages.
Choosing the Right Accommodation Based on Your Travel Plans
A vacation apartment or vacation home in El Paso can be chosen sensibly based on the experiences you have planned, without limiting the trip to just one activity. For culturally oriented days, the museums, Chamizal National Memorial, and Mission Trail offer many different topics to explore. Those who prefer physical activity can include Franklin Mountains State Park, the Lost Dog Trails, or the Rio Grande Riverpark and Trail System in their plans.
