Jasper County combines expansive water landscapes, species-rich wetlands and a multifaceted history. At B.A. Steinhagen Lake, also known as Town Bluff, 13 boat ramps are available, one of which is maintained by Jasper County. Those looking for a vacation rental or vacation home can therefore consider whether water-based experiences, wildlife observation or local history should be the focus of their trip.

Water and Nature in the Big Thicket

The Big Thicket National Preserve also extends into Jasper County. The protected region lies at the intersection of several significant biomes and consists of at least 40 percent wetlands. These include floodplains, oxbow lakes, swamps and transitional wetland areas, marshes, as well as tributaries and streams. This diversity makes the landscape especially interesting for travelers who want to experience a variety of natural environments.

For paddlers, the Big Thicket National Preserve offers three official Texas Paddling Trails. In addition, free ranger-led paddling tours are available. Sandy Creek Park has an accessible canoe launch. Those who want to plan their trip around water-based activities will therefore find several different options without all the offerings requiring the same location or the same type of day itinerary.

Martin Dies, Jr. State Park is a 705-acre recreational area on the B.A. Steinhagen Reservoir between Woodville and Jasper. The park comprises three units in Jasper County and Tyler County. The area's history also goes back a long way: Archaeological finds show that people have lived there for several thousand years. The Caddo made pottery from East Texas clay in the area around the park and often wove baskets and mats from reeds.

Historic Sites and Regional Heritage

Jasper County also offers many opportunities to explore cultural history. Bevilport was an important transshipment and trading center for river traffic on the Angelina River. Cotton, hides and other products from East Texas were shipped from there to markets in New Orleans. The Jasper County Courthouse is designated as a State Antiquities Landmark.

Those interested in architecture can explore the Beaty-Orton House, a two-story Victorian residence built in 1888 from local pine, which was later restored by the City of Jasper. The Waggoner-Scarborough Home reflects Colonial Revival and bungalow-style influences. The region's African American history includes the Dixie Freedom Colony and the Dixie Missionary Baptist Church, whose history began in 1853 with the construction of the church. Dixie Baptist Church has continuously served the colony's community since 1853.

Religious sites and cemeteries also preserve tangible traces of the past. Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church was founded in 1852, with Reverend John Bean as its first pastor. The oldest marked grave in Zion Hill Cemetery belongs to Joseph Wood, who died in Jasper County on September 16, 1854. Little Hope Primitive Baptist Church was officially founded in 1893; the church, school and cemetery of Little Hope were also known as “Seed Tick.”

The museums in Jasper offer further insights. The Jasper County Historical Museum features, among other things, exhibits on the Freedom Colonies established after the Civil War and is housed in the former Hancock Drug Store on Courthouse Square. The Jasper Fireman's Museum preserves firefighting memorabilia from all periods and is located in the Fire Hall. Kirbyville is also interesting for understanding the area's development: Kirbyville was founded when the Gulf, Beaumont, and Kansas City Railroad reached the town on May 1, 1895, and is considered a commercial center for Jasper County and Newton County.

Family Time at Sandy Creek Park

Sandy Creek Park in central Jasper offers children's play equipment, fishing ponds, a walking trail, picnic areas, basketball courts and a pavilion over the water. This makes it possible to combine active and more relaxing hours. On the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend in November, the City of Jasper hosts CHRISTMAS IN THE PARK there every year. The program includes illuminated Christmas decorations, musical and animated displays, a drone show and fireworks.

At CHRISTMAS IN THE PARK, families can also visit Santa Claus, ride Santa’s Choo-Choo Train, enjoy arts and crafts and ice skating, and take part in other children's activities. If you are planning a trip during this season, the festival is a special opportunity to combine your stay with a local experience.

The Right Accommodation for Your Travel Style

When looking for a vacation rental in Jasper County, it is worth deciding first what kind of vacation rhythm you want. Nature and water enthusiasts can base their plans around the paddling options, the reservoir and the wetlands. Those who prefer historical topics will find plenty of inspiration in Bevilport, the churches, cemeteries, museums and homes representing different periods of construction. For trips with children, Sandy Creek Park offers its own range of activities, while CHRISTMAS IN THE PARK provides a seasonal highlight.
