For an active itinerary, the South Sulphur Unit offers the 4.6-mile Coyote Run Trail for cycling. History in Cooper and Delta County

The Cooper Rail Depot was built in 1913 as a brick depot in the Spanish Revival style for the Texas Midland Railroad. It is one of only two surviving depots still standing along the line. Harry Patterson purchased the Cooper Rail Depot and dedicated it as a local history museum presenting the heritage of Cooper and Delta County. For visitors interested in cultural history, the depot is therefore a notable reference point for exploring the region’s railroad and local history.

Other sites also tell the story of the region’s development. The Delta County Courthouse was designed by Hoke Smith and built by the WPA in the Art Moderne style. Its defining features are the stepped cast-stone massing and the fluted pilasters between the windows. Oaklawn Cemetery has been designated a Historic Texas Cemetery since 2009. The original site of East Texas Normal College at 600 SE First St. in Cooper is designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark; the historic marker dates from 1967.

The region’s culture of remembrance also includes the DeSpain Bridge and the Pioneer Smith Brothers historical marker. The DeSpain Bridge stood at the place where the Bonham-Jefferson Road crossed the South Sulphur River and served the region’s cotton trade for about 20 years. The Pioneer Smith Brothers historical marker commemorates men who helped establish Delta County on the Texas frontier. A two-room schoolhouse was built in the Hobbs Thicket settlement in the early 1880s.
