Shelby County lies on the eastern border of Texas. The Sabine River separates the county from Louisiana, shaping a landscape where nature experiences, bodies of water and regional history stand side by side. Those planning a trip with varied activities for each day can choose between gardens, parks, lakes, hiking trails and historic sites here.

Experience History in Center

Center is an important starting point for historical discoveries. The Shelby County Museum is housed in a residence dating from the early 20th century. A timeline and historic rooms explore the history of the Caddo, Spanish explorers and pioneer settlers. You can find the museum at 230 Pecan Street in Center. The historic Shelby County Jail in Center now houses the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce.

The Shelby County Courthouse is also part of the town's history. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 31, 1971, and was open for tours. Another chapter of the region's past is the Regulator-Moderator War, which took place within Shelby County from 1842 to 1844. The conflict ended after Texas President Sam Houston dispatched 500 militiamen. These places and events give a trip through Shelby County a historical focus without requiring the stay to be limited to museum visits.

Parks, Trails and Bodies of Water

For active days, Center's park program offers four public parks and two walking trails. The municipal parks can be used free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis. Center Park has a fishing pond with a pier, a 0.4-mile multi-use trail, a picnic area and restrooms. Portacool Park adds a splash pad, walking loops and an accessible playground for everyone.

Various opportunities are also available outside the city. Toledo Bend Reservoir is used for recreation, extends for well over 100 river miles and is known for bass fishing. Timpson Reservoir has a water surface of 223 acres and a shoreline of 8 miles. It offers excellent bass fishing; because of the 14- to 21-inch slot limit, it produces numerous trophy-sized bass. At North Toledo Bend Wildlife Management Area, visitors can explore three miles of roads on foot. The area covers 3,650 acres and borders the northern part of Toledo Bend Reservoir.

Blooming Season, Festivals and Special Excursions

Lily Farm in Center is one of the largest daylily farms in the United States. Its blooming season typically lasts from Mother's Day to Father's Day, with peak bloom falling on Memorial Day weekend. During the Open House, Lily Farm sells daylily seedlings to the general public by the bunch. This is a special travel idea for anyone who would like to include gardens and seasonal impressions in their plans.

The event calendar brings together additional regional themes. The What-A-Melon Festival focuses on watermelons and typically takes place on the first weekend after July 4. The East Texas Poultry Festival in Center celebrates the heritage of poultry production and takes place on the first weekend in October. The festival includes craft exhibition booths with a wide selection of creative items, as well as the annual 5K Chicken Trot.

Choose the Right Accommodation Area

When searching for a holiday apartment or holiday home, you can base your accommodation choice on the experiences you want to have. For historic sightseeing and events, planning around Center is a natural choice, as it is the main reference point for the attractions mentioned. If water, fishing and walking are to be the focus, the reservoirs and the Wildlife Management Area are the key topics for your further research. Depending on the children's ages and the desired daily routine, families can weigh up the splash pad, park trails, nature and culture without having to fit all activities into a single outing.
