Klondike is located at the intersection of Farm Roads 1528 and 2890, three miles southwest of Cooper. The town’s layered settlement and economic history comes into focus through its cemeteries, shared school buildings, railroad, and cotton shipping, each representing a different chapter. When choosing your accommodation, the main question is whether you want to make Klondike’s local history the focus of your trip or also plan activities in the wider area.

A Settlement at Two Farm Roads

The area was settled by 1852 at the latest, when John Hunt donated land for Pleasant Grove Cemetery. From the 1860s onward, a Methodist congregation and a school in Klondike used the same building. The newly established Baptist congregation was also allowed to use the school building. Two months after its founding, New Prospect Baptist Church was renamed Klondike Baptist Church of Christ; in 1901, the Baptist congregation built a new building.

In 1895, the Texas-Midland Railroad ran a line through Pleasant Grove, an earlier name for Klondike, to Cooper; the settlement became a stop. The name Klondike refers to Canada’s Klondike region, made famous by the gold rush. A newspaper report published in 1957 records that the town was initially called Kate and was later renamed because another train station already had that name.

Schools, Cotton, and Cemeteries

The school’s history links individual dates with social conditions. In 1905, the Klondike school district had one school for 49 Black children with one teacher and another school for 134 White students with three teachers. After the Klondike school burned down in 1945, its district was consolidated with the Shiloh system to form the West Delta School District. Cotton shipping also shaped the economy: it was Klondike’s most important industry, and the town also had two large cotton gins. In the decade after 1914, the town remained an active shipping point for agricultural products.

The historic marker for Old Klondike Cemetery is near the intersection of FM 1528 and FM 2890; check the marker’s location before visiting. Shiloh Cemetery in Klondike was designated a Historic Texas Cemetery on September 18, 2012. It contains more than 900 graves, with burial dates ranging from 1850 to the present. The marker refers to Old Klondike Cemetery; the designation and grave count refer to Shiloh Cemetery.

History and Outdoor Activities in the Region

If you’d also like to include cycling alongside local history, you can ride three miles of trails at Doctors Creek in the wider region. Trail conditions may change; check the latest conditions before your outing. This offers two distinct trip focuses: local history in Klondike and cycling in the wider region.
