Traces of Migration, Religion, and Local History
The cultural history of Burleson County is also closely connected with the settlement histories of various communities. Caldwell Masonic Cemetery contains more than 2,700 burial sites and is an important testament to the heritage of Caldwell and Burleson County. The gravestones reflect the Czech and German heritage of the region. The cemetery became a public cemetery in 1950.
The New Tabor area of Burleson County was settled around 1870 by Czech-Moravian immigrants seeking fertile land and religious freedom. New Tabor continues to support the community with various assistance programs. New Tabor Brethren Church built a church building in 1893, which was destroyed by a tornado in 1915 and replaced later that same year.
Other places illustrate the area’s religious and cultural diversity. St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery is closely connected with the numerous settlers of Czech and Hispanic origin. The Catholic settlers who arrived in the area in 1884 named their settlement Frenstat after the Moravian community of Frenstat Rod Radhost, which they had left. San Salvador Mission Church was built by local families in 1908 after religious services had previously been held in private homes. It was named after the patron saint of Cefalù in Sicily, the hometown of the Italian immigrants who came here in 1894.
The Catholic community of Caldwell also left architectural traces: in 1895, it built a church dedicated to St. Mary, Our Lady of Lourdes, and four years later acquired the adjacent land for Caldwell Catholic Cemetery. The first burial took place in September 1899. In 2005, the facilities of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church also included a grotto of the Virgin Mary of Lourdes.
