Aiken County combines historic sites, protected landscapes and a variety of activities on the water. Those planning a trip with culture, nature and unique experiences will find different options for organizing their days. When choosing your vacation rental, you can therefore consider whether you primarily want to experience historic sites, hiking trails, water sports, art or regional products.

Discover History and Culture

A central historic attraction is Redcliffe Plantation, whose mansion was completed in 1859. The site also includes the only surviving cabin for enslaved people in South Carolina's state park system. Access to the mansion is only possible as part of a guided tour. These tours convey the history of the Hammond mansion and the historic stables, giving the visit a clear cultural focus.

The Aiken Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame and Museum also provides a special highlight. It honors 40 champion thoroughbreds that trained at the Aiken Training Track. For an evening with a sense of historic entertainment, there is The Big Mo: The drive-in theater was built in 1951 and is one of the few remaining operating drive-in theaters in South Carolina. In spring, summer and fall, it usually shows three double features every weekend.

Forests, Trails and Wildlife Watching

The Silver Bluff Audubon Sanctuary encompasses 3,410 acres of protected land, stretches along 2.6 miles of the Savannah River and has eight miles of hiking trails. More than 200 bird species have been recorded there. This makes it particularly easy to combine a stay with wildlife observation and walks. Hitchcock Woods offers a different landscape experience: The largest privately owned urban forest in the country is open 365 days a year from sunrise to sunset.

Boyd Pond Park features a 30-acre pond, a two-mile hiking trail and an 18-hole disc golf course established in 2016. These varied options help with planning your day: You can include a peaceful walk, a round of disc golf or a longer stay by the water in your itinerary.

Water Activities and Active Days

For rowing, Langley Pond Park offers a 2,000-meter course with eight lanes fully marked by buoys. Regattas, triathlons, water-skiing competitions and wakeboarding competitions are also held there. Aiken State Park is located on the South Edisto River and has a 1.7-mile canoe and kayak trail along the South Branch of the Edisto River.

Additional opportunities on the water are provided by the nine-mile Horse Creek Water Trail along historic Horse Creek and Edisto Boat Landing, which offers access to the South Edisto River and sufficient parking. A boat landing on the Savannah River also has spaces for trailers and cars or trucks, a large dock, grills and picnic areas. When choosing a vacation rental, it is therefore worth considering whether you want to plan your trip primarily around culture, hikes or water activities.

Art, Markets and Special Excursions

The Aiken Center For The Arts regularly presents gallery exhibitions by artists from the region, South Carolina and the wider state context. It also offers classes in various artistic media for all age groups. Regional art and history are the focus at the Arts & Heritage Center of North Augusta; the exhibitions change every three months.

The Aiken County Farmers Market is the oldest continuously operating county farmers market at the same location in South Carolina. It offers fresh produce, baked goods and local meats and cheeses. For an outing with children, Eudora Farms Petting Zoo and Drive-Thru Safari offers a petting zoo and a drive-through safari. Stable View is set in a 1,000-acre hilly landscape; visitors can watch or participate in equestrian activities there.
