Chester County combines river landscapes, forest trails, historic sites and lively events to create a destination with many different sides. The county is bordered by the Catawba River to the east and the Broad River to the west. It is also located directly along the I-77 corridor. For planning your trip, this means you can choose a vacation rental or holiday home based on your preferred focus – such as nature experiences, culture, special events or active days.

Lakes, Rivers and Trails for Different Travel Plans

Chester State Park is home to a 160-acre lake surrounded by a two-mile nature trail through pine forest. The park also bears a distinctive historical legacy: it was developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps, and several buildings constructed by the CCC in the 1930s are still in use there. This allows you to combine time outdoors with a look at the history of the area.

Those who prefer longer routes will find a 26-mile trail system at Woods Ferry Horse Trail, which is open to horseback riders, hikers and mountain bikers. A much shorter option is the Eagle Point (Museum) Trail. This easy one-way trail is 0.30 miles long and ends at a rise overlooking the Catawba River. When planning your day, you can therefore choose between an extended route and a short nature experience.

Landsford Canal State Park also offers different ways to experience the landscape. The Nature Trail runs along the riverbank. The 1.5-mile Canal Trail follows the historic towpath in a single direction and passes the foundations of an early mill dating from around 1800. Canoe access to the Catawba River is also available there.

History, Museums and Local Traditions

The Chester County Transportation Museum is housed in the former Seaboard Railroad depot, which was built in 1888. Vehicles on display there include a 1916 Ford and a 1921 LaFrance fire engine. The Chester County Historical Society Museum and Archives is located in the Chester County Jail, built in 1914. The archive’s Henry Orion Nichols Collection contains an estimated minimum of 250,000 images.

Events and local institutions offer further insights into the region’s history and present day. The Battle of Beckhamville is commemorated annually in Great Falls in Chester County. The commemoration includes reenactments at the actual battlefield at the intersection of S.C. Highways 97 and 99. The Flopeye Fish Festival is Chester County’s longest-running festival. In Chester, the annual HILLarity Festival takes place on the third weekend of October, while the Arts Council of Chester County organizes the Chester County Art Show every year.

Special Experiences and Regional Orientation

For an active trip, Skydive Carolina at Chester Catawba Airport offers a skydiving school, tandem jumps and programs for experienced skydivers. Those who want to include regional products in their plans can consider Cotton Hills Farms. The farm has been owned by the Wilson family since 1882 and sells fresh fruit and fresh vegetables directly.

The Chester County Visitor Center in downtown Chester provides maps and offers personalized assistance with planning your day and trip. When choosing your accommodation, it may be helpful to first determine which experiences you want: a longer trail, a museum visit, an event or a day by the river will each result in different travel plans. The towns of Chester, Richburg and Fort Lawn help with orientation within Chester County; Chester also provides its own starting point for further trip planning.
