Barnwell County offers a journey through nature, history, and agricultural traditions. Between lakeside trails, museums, and historic buildings, there are various ways to plan your day: You can choose a short loop by the water, combine longer trails with several activities, or explore the history of the area’s communities. When looking for a vacation rental, it is therefore worth considering first whether nature experiences, cultural discoveries, or regional features should be the focus of your stay.

Loop Trails, Lakes, and Outdoor Activities

At Barnwell State Park, the Dogwood Interpretive Trail is an easy, 1.5-mile loop around the southernmost of two lakes. The manageable route fits easily into a day trip without requiring you to spend an entire day on a single trail. Those looking for more choice while hiking can take the Fernhill Trail, a loop in the shape of a figure eight. Maps along the trail allow you to choose between a shorter and a longer hike. The trail is also suitable for cycling and birdwatching.

There are also various leisure activities in Barnwell itself. Fuller Park has a nine-hole disc golf course, a splash pad, a loop trail, and wetlands. At Kilkenny Park, the lake provides access for fishing; picnic tables and grills are also available there. These different options make it possible to plan a stay with both more active and more relaxed sections. When approaching Barnwell State Park from the north via I-95, take Exit 57 and follow Highway 64 to Barnwell. The park is 7 miles northeast of Barnwell.

Experience History at Specific Sites

The county’s history can be seen in individual buildings and collections. Blackville’s train depot, built around 1910, was moved to Court House Square and renovated in 1985. Saint Andrew's Chapel in Barnwell was built in 1831 and is considered the oldest surviving original Catholic church in South Carolina.

In Barnwell, a former church building was moved to Academy Street and is now used as the Circle Theatre, a center for the performing arts. The Barnwell County Museum features numerous exhibits and objects relating to the history and cultural heritage of Barnwell County and the surrounding community. In addition, the Williston Museum displays tools for making hats that belonged to Joe Kelly Sr. In Blackville, the James H. Hammond Museum was dedicated in 1970. In front of the Barnwell County courthouse, there is also a freestanding vertical sundial that Barnwell was given by Joseph D. Allen in 1858.

Agriculture and Regional Distinctive Features

Williston has a special connection to agriculture. For more than 30 years, asparagus was shipped from there to all parts of the country during two spring months each year. At times, more asparagus was shipped from Williston than from any other place in the world. The Agricultural Heritage Hands-On Learning Center addresses the past and future of agriculture through an educational program for students. The Barnwell Farmers Market is located in Fuller Park in Barnwell and adds another specific place to the region’s impressions.

There are also distinctive destinations beyond the places mentioned above: God's Acre Healing Springs is located in Barnwell County, just outside Blackville, and includes artesian springs.
