Sumter County: Nature, Culture and Unique Vacation Experiences
Accommodation in Sumter County
Sumter County combines expansive landscapes, distinctive gardens and a multifaceted history. Between Lake Marion, Manchester State Forest and Swan Lake Iris Gardens, you will find a variety of ideas for planning your trip: nature experiences, paths for walks and bike rides, historic churches, museums and art. When looking for a vacation rental or holiday home, you can therefore first consider whether you would prefer your days away to focus on landscapes, culture, events or a mixture of these.
Gardens, Paths and Forest Landscapes
Swan Lake Iris Gardens offer unusual details to discover on an outing. In Bland Garden, a cypress boardwalk approximately 1,000 feet long leads into the swamp. The gardens also include more than 120 iris varieties and are the only public park in the United States where all eight swan species are represented. In the Butterfly Garden, visitors can learn to identify six different butterflies and their caterpillars, including their respective host plants and preferred nectar plants.
Another route through the landscape is the 3.1-mile Prisma Health Shot Pouch Greenway. It leads from Dillon Park to Swan Lake Iris Gardens and can be used for walking, jogging and cycling. Along Shot Pouch Branch, a natural habitat for diverse wildlife is preserved. In the Chocolate Garden, established in 2009, you can discover edible plants with a chocolate-like appearance and flowers with a chocolate-like scent. The edible plants should not be sampled.
For larger natural areas, Manchester State Forest is the place to go. It extends across Clarendon County and Sumter County, covers more than 29,830 acres and consists of mixed stands of pine and hardwood trees. Parts of the Palmetto Trail and other forest paths offer horseback riding opportunities in the state forest. When choosing accommodation, you can take different daily rhythms into account: short routes through gardens and parks are complemented by extensive forest and landscape experiences.

The Sumter Opera House was built in its present form from 1893 to 1895 and is a prominent cultural landmark. Several churches also tell stories of different eras. Church of the Holy Cross was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1973. Its present building was constructed from 1850 to 1852 and is an example of Victorian Gothic rammed-earth construction. Its features include the original Erben pipe organ installed in 1851, which is still in use today. High Hills Baptist Church was founded in 1772, while its present building dates from 1803. In April 1776, it served as a meeting place for South Carolina churches to elect delegates to the Continental Association.
You will find further historical connections at First Missionary Baptist Church. It was the first Baptist church in Sumter built by an African American congregation and was founded as Shiloh Baptist Church in 1868. Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Memorial Park covers nine acres and includes a replica of Bethune's birthplace, an outdoor pavilion, a playground and a picnic area. The paved Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Nature Trail features historical information panels and can be used for walking or cycling.
