Discover Tate County: Arkabutla Lake, Nature and History
Accommodation in Tate County
Tate County combines the landscape around Arkabutla Lake with the history of Senatobia and a variety of opportunities for nature observation, cycling and horseback riding. Arkabutla Lake is located in Tate and DeSoto counties in northern Mississippi. Senatobia is situated along Interstate 55 and became a railroad junction in 1856 after the Tennessee and Mississippi Railroad reached the town. Those looking to combine nature and cultural experiences on a trip will find a range of options for planning their days here.
Arkabutla Lake and Current Planning
A good first point of orientation is the Visitor Information Center at Arkabutla Lake. It is open weekdays from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and provides brochures, regulations, camping information and maps of the surrounding area, among other resources. When choosing a vacation rental or other accommodation in Tate County, it can be helpful to determine the focus of your trip in advance: Should the emphasis be on scenery and wildlife observation, historical experiences or a particular outdoor activity?
The current situation is important for boating excursions. Arkabutla Lake has had significantly lower water levels for an extended period, which is affecting access for boats and water-related activities. Many boat ramps are currently closed; Hwy. 51 Landing is the only open ramp. The Arkabutla Lake Dam project is located on the Coldwater River and offers opportunities for sailing, but current water levels and ramp openings should be taken into account when making specific plans.
Trails for Cycling, Horseback Riding and Nature Observation
The Coldwater River Nature Trail System includes two hiking trails measuring 3 and 5 miles, respectively, as well as the self-guided Big Oak Nature Trail. The entire system is currently closed until further notice. Other offerings have their own focus: the 4.5-mile Sunfish Bay Trail was designed for horseback riding. The Bayou Point Single-Track Mountain Bike Trail is exclusively for mountain bikes; hiking and horseback riding are not permitted there.
The Swinging Bridge Nature Trail includes an old section of the Coldwater River from before the dam was built. The Senatobia Wetlands project also offers information panels and an area for observing wildlife and waterfowl. The completed 2.2-mile beginner loop, Backwater Loop, is open for use. This allows different interests to be accommodated without combining every activity into one shared trail or a single visitor offering.
Senatobia and the Tate County Courthouse
Those interested in the history of the region can include Senatobia in their travel plans. The town was founded in 1834 on two parcels of land acquired from the Chickasaw Nation for $1.25 per acre. Its later development as a railroad junction is one of the defining chapters in the town's history.
New historical exhibits were fully installed at the Tate County Courthouse in 2026. They can be viewed as part of a self-guided tour. The building is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The cornerstone was laid on June 24, 1875, and business began there in 1876. The courthouse is considered the oldest continuously operating courthouse in Mississippi. Its architectural character is predominantly classified as High Victorian Romanesque Revival; it was designated a Mississippi Landmark in 1984 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.
Which Base Suits Your Trip?
When looking for a vacation rental in Tate County, your preferred mix of activities is therefore the main deciding factor. Those interested in culture can take the courthouse opening hours and self-guided tour into account. For days in nature, the Senatobia Wetlands project and the open Backwater Loop provide specific points of reference, while cyclists and riders should pay attention to the designated use of each trail. Anyone planning water activities should take the currently restricted access to Arkabutla Lake into account again when planning each day, both before booking and before every excursion.
