Newton offers another historical focus with the Newton Main Street Historic District I. The commercial district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 15, 2003, and is characterized by the Late Victorian style. The Santa Fe Depot in Newton was added to the same register on April 11, 1985. It is a Tudor Revival-style building with significance related to the railroad.
The Abilene-Chisholm Trail also makes the landscape legible in historical terms. It ran along the east bank of the Little Arkansas to Sedgwick and then on both sides of Sand Creek to Newton. One branch passes through the Bethel College campus, where a trail marker stands. Three branches cross the grounds of the Kauffman Museum; there, you will find a terrain depression and a marker.
