Morris County: Santa Fe Trail History and Lake Experiences
Accommodation in Morris County
Council Grove and Council Grove Lake appeal to different travel interests: historic sites connected to the Santa Fe Trail on one hand, and water activities and nature on the other. If you’re looking for a vacation rental in Morris County, it helps to first consider which of these interests will shape your trip. The historic sites tell stories of trade and westward travel; at the lake, activities on and around the water take center stage.
Santa Fe Trail History in Council Grove
Neosho Crossing is a natural ford with a rocky bed and is one of the best-documented river crossings on the Santa Fe Trail. Between 1825 and 1847, travelers left messages about trail conditions at the foot of the Post Office Oak. The tree died in 1990, but its stump remains and is protected by a shelter east of the bridge over the Neosho River. The paved Neosho Riverwalk runs along both banks around the crossing, linking the riverfront with this historic site.
The buildings in the historic downtown district also tell the story of Council Grove’s development: they document its transformation from an early supply point on the Santa Fe Trail through World War II. The district is a National Historic Landmark. Highlights include Italianate and Romanesque commercial buildings, as well as simpler commercial architecture from the 1920s. The Kaw Mission was completed in 1851 as a manual training school for Kanza boys on the Santa Fe Trail. The stone house beside the Post Office Oak dates to 1864 and is now operated as a museum by the Morris County Historical Society. Built in 1857, the Last Chance Store is considered the city’s oldest surviving commercial building.
Various homes and museums offer more ways to explore local history. The Post Office Oak Museum displays medical equipment, school furniture, cameras, railroad memorabilia, and wood carvings, among other items. A typical visit probably takes 30 minutes or less. The Trail Days Arts & History Center occupies a former grocery store from 1947 and hosts cultural, historical, and arts education presentations about the Flint Hills. The Trail Days Historic Sites also include a restored 1902 schoolhouse, where children and adults can learn about one-room schools.
Water, Nature, and Activities at Council Grove Lake
Council Grove Lake has more than 3,000 acres of water. Possible activities include motorboating, water skiing, tubing, personal watercraft, and sailing. Eight single-lane boat ramps are located in campgrounds operated by the Corps of Engineers; two more single-lane ramps are maintained by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. The lake is also known for Channel Catfish and Crappie fishing. The only designated swimming area is at Richey Cove Campground.
The lake is in the Flint Hills region of Kansas, whose predominant ecosystem is tallgrass prairie. At Council Grove Lake, the 1.25-mile Pioneer Nature Trail passes through an area where visitors can observe wildflowers, butterflies, birds, mammals, and reptiles. In the surrounding area of Morris County, Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve is about 16 miles south of Council Grove Lake; it has additional hiking trails. The distance is a useful guide for planning, but it does not indicate travel time.
Cultural Events and Choosing Your Vacation Rental
Washunga Days is an annual festival celebrating Council Grove’s past and present culture, with activities and entertainment for all ages. Second Saturdays may also be worth considering when planning your dates: the event takes place in Council Grove throughout the year on the second Saturday of each month. If a festival or event date will shape your trip, check the specific dates in advance.
Your preferred focus for excursions is a practical starting point when choosing a vacation rental. If you mainly want to explore Santa Fe Trail history and the museums in Council Grove, consider these sites when looking for a suitable location. If water sports, fishing, or nature trails are higher on your list, focus on the options around the lake. This lets you compare possible locations based on your travel plans without treating every experience as equally important.
