In Dickinson County, history comes to life at specific places: Abilene played an important role during the cattle drives. At the end of the Chisholm Trail, numerous cattle were driven there and loaded into cattle cars. Today, its range of attractions spans this past, railroads, and Eisenhower heritage, as well as museums, theater, and routes through the countryside.

Cattle Drives, Eisenhower, and Historic Sites

The Trail Center at Old Abilene Town is an interactive museum about the Chisholm Trail and the Smoky Hill Trail. Historic Old Abilene Town can be explored on foot and includes museums as well as the Alamo. Access is seasonal; check dates before planning your visit. This lets you learn about the trails not only by their names, but also through a variety of exhibits on site.

At the Eisenhower Presidential Library, Museum and Boyhood Home, visitors can explore the life and legacy of Dwight D. Eisenhower. Eisenhower was a five-star general and became the 34th president of the United States. The Eisenhower Boyhood Home is furnished as it was at the time of Ida Eisenhower’s death in 1946. The furnishings are original, although some have been moved for visitor tours.

As of August 2026, tickets for tours of the Eisenhower Boyhood Home were available only on site. Tours are limited to ten guests and often sell out during peak season. Check dates and ticket terms before your visit. Another historic house is the Seelye Mansion, built in 1905; many of its furnishings are from the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis.

Museums, Railroads, and Culture

The Dickinson County Heritage Center includes the Dickinson County Historical Society museum, with outdoor exhibits and additional buildings; the C.W. Parker Carousel National Historic Landmark; and the Museum of Independent Telephony. Visitors can ride a hand-carved C.W. Parker carousel from 1901. At the Museum of Independent Telephony, visitors can also try out a party-line telephone exchange that once connected telephone calls across the country. The carousel and telephone exchange offer two very different ways to explore the history of technology and everyday life.

The Herington Historical Museum preserves thousands of artifacts, exhibits, and photographs about Herington and the southeastern part of Dickinson County. The Kansas Auto Racing Museum tells the story of the state’s motorsports history through stories, artifacts, and exhibits. Those interested in the performing arts can enjoy theater productions at Great Plains Theatre, as well as state-of-the-art training for young artists from the region. Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church also has a long history of use: it has been in continuous use as a religious institution since 1878.

The Abilene City Park Historic District covers approximately 40 acres on the west side of Abilene. Abilene City Park/Eisenhower Park is eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion A in the areas of recreation and culture, as well as community planning and development.

Routes and Outdoor Experiences

The Iron Horse Trail is 5.5 miles long, connects Enterprise with the nearby city of Abilene, and passes through the Smoky Hill River Valley, with its fertile Kansas farmland. There is also a 34-mile route for cyclists that passes historic sites and artworks related to the Eisenhower era. A gravel cycling route described as beginner-friendly starts and ends at the Greyhound Hall of Fame Museum. The routes have different descriptions; check the conditions for each route before setting out.

Public hunting for migratory birds is permitted at Herington Reservoir. This regulation was observed in August 2026; check the current rules before your trip. The Father Padilla Trail runs around the lake in Herington. In Enterprise, America's Park has covered picnic areas; confirm the current condition of the facilities on site.

When choosing a vacation rental, the experiences you have planned can be a useful starting point: consider whether historic homes and museums or routes and outdoor activities should be the focus. For cycling routes, the stated distances and starting and ending points can help you compare them; the information does not give travel times between locations. So choose based on the destinations that matter to you during your stay, rather than inferring a daily itinerary from the route descriptions.
