Nature Experiences and Railway History in Charlton County

Charlton County is ideal for travelers who want to combine wildlife observation, distinctive landscapes, and regional history. The Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge defines the character of the area with a unique ecosystem, a fascinating cultural history, and diverse wildlife. At the same time, the Folkston Funnel, a railway museum, and historic sites tell the story of the region's development. Depending on your interests, you can plan active days in nature, focused cultural discoveries, or a varied combination of both.

Okefenokee: Trails, Water, and Educational Programs

The Folkston entrance to the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge is known as the Suwannee Canal Recreation Area and has seven hiking trails. The Chesser Island Boardwalk is 0.75 miles each way and leads through cypress forest, bush and shrub vegetation, and prairie habitats. At 0.25 miles, the Upland Discovery Trail is considerably shorter. The loop trail passes through upland areas with longleaf pines and past trees containing cavities made by red-cockaded woodpeckers. If you are traveling with different age groups, you can factor these two routes into your daily planning based on their length and landscapes.

Near Folkston is the main entrance to the refuge. There, staff offer various educational programs and special events seasonally. Educational offerings at Okefenokee range from guided hikes to hands-on learning. For more immersive nature experiences, Okefenokee Adventures offers guided boat tours led by naturalists. Jon boats, kayaks, canoes, and bicycles are also available for rent. Visitors can get hot meals at the Camp Cornelia Café.

Folkston Funnel and Regional Culture

The Folkston Funnel is a double-track railway line and the most important rail connection for train traffic to and from Florida. The viewing platform has lighting, ceiling fans, and a scanner that lets you listen in on radio communications between the trains. The visitor area also has picnic tables, a grill, and restroom facilities. The restored old Folkston railroad depot houses the Folkston Railroad Transportation Museum. Folkston RailWatch is one of the annual events in Charlton County and adds its own special focus to the railway themes.

Historic buildings and sites add further dimensions to the trip. Sardis Church is the oldest church in Charlton County and was founded before 1821. In 1840, it was moved to its current location or one nearby. The pulpit bears a bullet mark from the Indian Wars. Traders Hill, originally known as Fort Alert, was established in the 18th century. Today's Traders Hill Park was developed on the site of the old courthouse when Traders Hill was the county seat in 1854. The park includes a basic campground, picnic facilities, nature trails, a boat ramp, and a fishing pier.
