Bryan offers different ways to explore history and landscape: a self-guided drive through southern Bryan County, connections to Ford history in Richmond Hill, and nature and waterside destinations in the county. Choose whether to focus your trip on cultural history, a scheduled tour, or waterside destinations. These interests can also help you choose the right vacation rental for your trip.

The Heritage Trail: History at Your Own Pace

The Coastal Bryan Heritage Trail shares the history and heritage of southern Bryan County on a self-guided driving tour. You can explore the route at your own pace; its themes focus on the region’s history. It follows public roads past the fronts of private homes and active cemeteries and churches. Stay on public roads and do not enter private property. Maps for the Coastal Bryan Heritage Trail are available at the Richmond Hill Museum, Fort McAllister, and the Richmond Hill Visitors Bureau.

Individual sites also tell different stories about the region’s heritage. Bryan Neck Presbyterian Church is the oldest church congregation in lower Bryan County. Burnt Church Cemetery preserves the graves of founding planter-era families, including the Clay, McAllister, and Maxwell families.

Ford History and Places of Remembrance

In Richmond Hill, the Richmond Hill History Museum is housed in the former kindergarten building that the Fords built in 1940. Visitors can learn more about the Fords’ contributions to the region and Richmond Hill’s long human and natural history. Topics include the Guale, Gen. James Oglethorpe, Gullah-Geechee culture, and Gen. William T. Sherman’s March to the Sea during the Civil War, which ended in Richmond Hill.

Martha-Mary Chapel was built by Henry and Clara Ford in 1937 and furnished with locally handcrafted furniture and other fittings. When it opened in 1936, the Ford Community House was a lively gathering place. Students learned cooking, sewing, and dancing there. Together, these details offer concrete connections to local history: a museum building with a former use, a chapel with handcrafted furnishings, and a historic gathering place with a wide range of subjects taught.

Nature and Waterside Destinations in the County

Another kind of recreation area is J. F. Gregory Park in Richmond Hill: it covers 335 acres and is designated as a multipurpose recreation area.

At the Tivoli River Fishing Pier & Kayak Launch in Bryan County, there is an ADA-accessible fishing area, accessible parking, paved paths from the parking area to the fishing area, and cutouts in the railings for wheelchairs. For planning purposes, the fishing area, parking, paved paths, and railing cutouts are described specifically. Fisherman's Co-op Park in Bryan County serves as a launch site for small boats.

To reach the Bryan County Fort McAllister Boat Ramp, take GA Highway 144 and GA Highway Spur 144 from Exit 90. The ramp is located before the entrance to Fort McAllister State Park. The waterside destinations therefore differ in their stated uses: from a fishing area with explicitly listed accessibility features to a launch site for small boats and a designated boat ramp.

Self-Guided Drive or Scheduled Tour?

The Coastal Bryan Heritage Trail is a self-guided driving tour; ranger-led tours of the fort are also offered at Fort McAllister State Park. They take place Wednesday through Sunday at 2 p.m., subject to events and scheduling. If you want to plan your day around this tour, confirm the time with the park in advance. This lets you choose between a self-paced drive focused on regional history and a tour with a set time.

When choosing a vacation rental in Bryan, you can weigh these different travel interests: the self-guided route, the stories surrounding the museum and historic buildings, or destinations for fishing, kayaking, and launching small boats.
