Stephens County offers a diverse combination of waterfalls, wooded landscapes, military history, historic homes, and cultural events. When choosing a vacation rental or vacation home, it is therefore worth considering the focus you want for your trip: nature experiences, water activities, historical insights, or music and theater each shape different vacation days.

Waterfalls and Wooded Landscapes

One striking natural attraction is Toccoa Falls. The waterfall is 186 feet high and is located on the wooded campus of Toccoa Falls College. Access is via the Gate Cottage Gift Shop. Anyone who wants to begin their trip with a distinctive landscape impression will find a clearly described starting point for a visit here. Currahee Mountain is also characteristic of the area and is the highest peak in Stephens County. Part of the mountain lies within the Chattahoochee National Forest.

Tugaloo Bend also offers a different perspective on the landscape. Day rentals of canoes and kayaks are available there for excursions on the Tugaloo River, Lake Hartwell, or Yonah Lake. Tugaloo Bend Park covers 87 acres. In the 18th century, the Indigenous town of “Estatoe” was located on the site; later, in the 19th and 20th centuries, it was home to an operating farm. Nature, water, and history can all be taken into account together when planning a trip here, without implying a single fixed itinerary.

Historic Places and Insights into the Past

Traveler's Rest was built around 1815 by James R. Wyly as an inn along a stagecoach route and as a plantation home. In 1964, the building was designated a National Historic Landmark. Visitors can tour Traveler's Rest and see original artifacts and furnishings. This makes the site especially appealing to travelers who want not only to view historic buildings from the outside but also to learn about their furnishings and former functions.

Military history is the focus of the Currahee Military Museum. The museum is located at the site of the old railroad depot in Toccoa and houses photographs, documents, and memorabilia from World War II. The museum also includes a stable where members of the PID were housed before and after D-Day. Camp Toccoa was built in the 1930s under the Works Projects Administration and served the National Guard. During World War II, around 17,000 soldiers trained there.

Camp Toccoa at Currahee is open to visitors on Fridays from 12 to 3 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Sundays from 12 to 3 p.m.; group tours are available upon request. These specific hours can play an important role in planning the day. For travel by train, the Amtrak Crescent stops daily at Toccoa’s restored station.

Music, Theater, and Events

Stephens County also offers a diverse cultural program. The Toccoa Symphony gives concerts at various venues throughout Stephens County every year. The Currahee Arts Festival is held each spring by the City of Toccoa. On Saturday evenings in summer, the Ida Cox Music Series brings various musical genres to the stage in Toccoa.

The Ritz Theatre at the Schaefer Center hosts theater, music, and film events and is also a historic landmark listed as a National Register Historic Landmark. The Toccoa Stephens Community Theater offers live theater experiences for Stephens County and the surrounding counties. The Festival of Trees also takes place in December and supports local nonprofit organizations.

Which Location Is Right for Your Trip?

Accommodation in Stephens County can be chosen based on which of these aspects interests you most. Toccoa Falls, Currahee Mountain, and Tugaloo Bend are the main attractions for nature and water activities. Those interested in history can include Traveler's Rest, Camp Toccoa, and the Currahee Military Museum in their plans. Music and theater dates add evening or seasonal activities to the trip. This way, you choose your vacation rental not only according to the purpose of your trip but also according to the experiences you want to discover during your stay in Stephens County.
