Khorol: Stream Landscape, Memorial Sites and Botanical Garden
Accommodation in Khorol
Khorol brings together a distinctive stream landscape, a Botanical Garden and several places of remembrance. Zubanivskyi Stream feeds a cascade of ponds, while memorials commemorate different experiences from 1941 to 1943. The collection at the local history museum also offers another historical perspective. Landscape and history thus sit side by side, each with its own focus.
Stream Landscape and Botanical Garden
Zubanivskyi Stream, formerly Doshtschowa Producha, shapes Khorol’s landscape and feeds a cascade of ponds. The former name and the current name refer to the same stream; its connection with the pond landscape is also important to the character of the city.
Khorol Botanical Garden was founded in 2009, is located within the city and covers 18 hectares around Zubanivskyi Stream. It is a nature reserve of national importance and also a research institution. The stream and the garden therefore represent different aspects of nature: one is a defining landscape feature with a cascade of ponds, while the other is a clearly delineated botanical institution with protected-area and research status.
Places of Remembrance
The “Mohyla radianskykh viiskovopolonenykh” memorial stands at the grave of more than 22,000 prisoners of war. The memorial includes a life-size sculpture of a soldier. It is located at the corner of Vokzalna and Molodizhna Streets.
The “Bratska mohyla radianskykh voiniv ta zhertv fashyzmu” mass grave commemorates 17,000 tortured Soviet soldiers from 1941 to 1943, as well as soldiers who died in 1941 during defensive battles against the fascists. It is located on Vokzalna Street near the oil depot. The “Khorolska yama” memorial complex commemorates the victims of the “Khorolska yama” death camp (Dulag 160), which operated from October 1941 to September 1943. The complex is located at the corner of Vokzalna and Molodizhna Streets. Vokzalna Street is the common point of reference for all three memorial sites.
A Broader Historical Perspective
The collection at Khorol’s local history museum, as described in 2017, includes artefacts from the Stone Age, Eneolithic and Bronze Age through the early Slavs and Kyivan Rus to the present day at that time. Its historical scope therefore extends far beyond the war years.
This contrast offers a concrete point of reference for anyone interested in Khorol’s history: the memorial sites relate to specific events and victims from 1941 to 1943, while the museum collection spans a much longer period across different eras. These are different approaches to history, not simply two versions of the same subject.
