Poltava Oblast brings together extensive wetlands, river landscapes and nature trails, as well as museums and archaeological heritage. This variety is especially vivid in Pyriatyn and Nyzhnosulskyi National Parks, where winding rivers and reed beds sit alongside steppes, meadows and valuable wetlands. This gives you a choice of different themes for planning your trip, from wildlife watching and waterscapes to cultural destinations such as Opishnia and Poltava.

Wetlands and rivers in two national parks

Valuable wetlands cover almost half of Pyriatyn National Park. Its landscapes also include wooded islands, steppes and meadows, as well as the winding course of the Uday River. According to regional environmental information published in 2024, Pyriatyn National Park and Nyzhnosulskyi National Park are the two national parks in Poltava Oblast.

In Nyzhnosulskyi National Park, the Sula flows through meadows and reed beds. Downstream, it branches into numerous channels, forming islands and shallow-water areas; hay meadows and pastures border wetlands there. This makes the contrast between the landscapes clear: in Pyriatyn, Uday, steppes and wooded islands are among the defining features, while in Nyzhnosulskyi the Sula, with its side channels and shallow waters along the banks, takes centre stage.

Nature trails and outdoor activities

A regional description published in 2024 lists almost 280 kilometres of ecotourism routes in Pyriatyn National Park. One specific example is the “Podorozh do ozera Sudevske” ecological nature trail in Nyzhnosulskyi National Park, near the village of Khudoliivka. It is 3 kilometres long and has nine stations along the full route; a shortened version is also possible. The trail therefore has a clearly defined length, with the Sula landscape as its natural setting.

The Onishkivska ecological nature trail in the Romanchyk area offers a different focus: its concept includes eight stations where a guide introduces visitors to the history of the Romanchyk area and the diversity of its flora and fauna. Water tourism and recreational and sport fishing are also practised in Nyzhnosulskyi National Park. Together, the trails and waterside activities offer different themes for a stay: a marked route with stations, learning about nature and landscapes, or activities around the river areas.

Museums, history and archaeological heritage

A regional visitor list from 2020 included, among five tourist attractions, the National Museum-Reserve of Ukrainian Pottery in Opishnia, the Vasyl Krychevsky Local History Museum in Poltava, the M. V. Gogol National Museum-Reserve, and the “Battlefield of Poltava” State Historical and Cultural Preserve. Historical artefacts are on display at the preserve: the collection ranges from bladed and firearms to paintings, portraits, icons and prints, as well as battle flags, uniforms, old books and maps. Guided tours are offered in Ukrainian and English.

Bilsk Hillfort also connects a specific place with a clearly defined historical theme. It is an archaeological monument of national significance; visitors can explore the hillfort and see its impressive defensive structures. In 2025, another cultural attraction opened in Opishnia: the Mykola Poshyvail Memorial Museum and Estate. These sites offer different points of interest, from archaeological fortifications and historical collections to Ukrainian pottery.

Choosing the right focus for your trip

When looking for a holiday rental in Poltava Oblast, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on. If rivers and wetlands are your priority, the national parks offer specific landscapes to explore; for nature trails, Khudoliivka and the Romanchyk area are named points of reference. If you prefer museums and cultural heritage, you can use Opishnia, Poltava or Bilsk as a guide when choosing where to stay. This helps turn the wide range of nature and culture on offer into a more focused choice for your base on the trip.
