Tranemo – Nature, Glass History and Holiday Apartments

Tranemo combines open cultural landscapes with barren marshes, deep mixed forests and numerous lakes. Visitor activities in the municipality include fishing, hiking, cycling and paddling. Covering 47 square kilometres, Komosse is one of the largest contiguous marshland areas in southern Sweden.

Landscape and Nature

Komosse södra encompasses the Bohestramossen, Johansjömossen and Fiskerydsmossen marshes on the border between Västergötland and Småland. The marshes are largely treeless; larger pools are concentrated in the southern part of Johansjömossen. Komosse södra is a Natura 2000 protected area jointly managed by the municipalities of Tranemo and Ulricehamn.

The Hofsnäs nature trails are located in the Torpanäset nature reserve, which is characterised by ancient oak trees, pastureland and species-rich ground flora, and provides a habitat for the endangered hermit beetle, which is listed on the Red List. The Torpa–Hofsnäs area at Yttre Åsunden in Tranemo Municipality is home to numerous rare lichens, fungi and wood-dwelling insects listed on the Red List, which are primarily associated with old oak trees. More than 130 bird species have been recorded around Lake Torpasjön near Torpanäset.

The Malensjöarnas FVO fishing area includes Lille Malen, Stormalen and Mörkemalen. The three lakes are surrounded by spruce and deciduous forest; species found there include pike, perch, pike-perch, bream and eel. Kroksjöns fiskecamp offers put-and-take fishing for rainbow trout.

In Fagerås, paths lead through the daffodil fields. During the season, more than one million flowering daffodils can be seen there. Rhododendrons also begin to bloom towards the end of May, making the area well worth a visit.

Trails, Water and Cycling

The Hofsnäs nature trails consist of three easy circular routes between 1 and 4.8 kilometres long; the shortest is adapted for accessibility. The trails begin at a car park in Tranemo Municipality, while the nearest bus stop is in Länghem, approximately five kilometres from the trails.

Björnöleden is just over four kilometres long, begins at the car park near Mörkö and runs mostly along a boardwalk as a circular route. Approximately 300 metres of the Komosse boardwalk have been widened and fitted with a side barrier to prevent strollers and wheelchairs from rolling off; the trail leads to a platform with a fire pit and several accessible benches.

Jälmåleden is a 35-kilometre hiking trail in Tranemo Municipality. Jälmåleden allows hiking to be combined with paddling on the Jälmån River. The trail passes several sights, including Viking Age burial grounds and ruins from the 19th-century industrial era.

Marjeboleden is a seven-kilometre-long, easy-to-walk route along Lake Marjebosjön and can also be used with a stroller. Along the route, there is information about historic sites, including iron production and Marie Abbey. Marjeboleden also passes a bathing area and a barbecue site by the lake, offering views over Lake Marjebosjön.

The bathing area at Lake Tranemosjön in Tranemo has a jetty, a bathing platform, grassy areas, a toilet, a boat jetty, tables and benches, as well as a beach volleyball court.

Ätradalsleden is a 199-kilometre national cycle route between Falköping and Falkenberg; 95 kilometres run along former railway embankments that are completely free of motor traffic. Between Ambjörnarp and Sjötofta, rail biking is possible on the former Landeryd–Falköping railway line. When rail biking, there is an opportunity to take a break, have coffee and go swimming at the rest area near Holmåkra, approximately four kilometres to the south.

Culture and History

Glasets Hus is a cultural centre at Limmareds Glasbruk with a glassworks, glass museum, exhibition hall, event spaces, activity park and restaurant. Limmareds Glasbruk is Sweden’s oldest glassworks still in operation and was founded in 1740. Characteristic buildings from the industrial community can be seen around the museum.

At Torpa Stenhus, guided castle tours, castle theatre performances and visits to craftspeople are available. The castle café and restaurant serve food made from seasonal ingredients and inspired by the castle’s centuries-old hunting traditions; the focus is often on game dishes.

Mossebo kyrka was completed by Joseph Hansson in 1773. Inside, there are pictorial depictions of biblical stories and an original portrait of Joseph Hansson. The church also contains one of the few surviving chandeliers from Limmareds Glasbruk; it was made in 1855. Mossebo kyrka has a ramp on the south side and an accessible toilet at the car park.
