Styrsö combines diverse coastal nature with rocks, bathing spots, nature trails and a multifaceted island history. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment for a stay in the archipelago can use their preferred combination of sea, activities, local history and peaceful discoveries as a basis for choosing a location. The island offers various points of interest for this: Tången reflects the character of a traditional fishing village, while the area around Stora Rös and the outer parts of the island offers opportunities to experience nature and culture.

Coast, bathing spots and paths

Styrsö has diverse coastal nature with rocky areas. There are good opportunities for fishing all year round. A map of the island also shows nature trails and marked paths for walking and jogging. If you like to alternate between activities and time by the water when planning your day, you will find various documented destinations here without having to commit to just one type of outing.

Styrsö Bratten offers bathing opportunities on the beach and at a bathing jetty about 300 metres from the ferry landing. In Styrsö Uttervik, there is a small bay for younger children as well as a bathing island with a jetty area and bathing ladders. Uttervik is 1.2 kilometres from the Styrsö Tången stop. This information can help you determine your preferred focus when choosing accommodation: a location near the ferry landing, a bathing destination or an area from which you can explore paths and island villages.

Stora Rös and the island landscape

Stora Rös reaches 60 metres above sea level and is the highest point in the archipelago. From there, the view extends across three landscapes in western Sweden. Stora Rös is also a Bronze Age burial mound. The site therefore combines a specific landscape view with a historical connection, without implying any particular walking time or level of difficulty.

Brännholmsviken is another accessible nature destination. Cleared paths through Styrsö’s outer areas lead there, and further nature trails run towards Styrsö Skäret. The so-called “Vikingakyrkogården” is located at Brännholmsviken, where the archipelago’s first church stood. However, the site does not date from the Viking Age. This chronological classification is important when comparing historical sites on Styrsö.

Fishing villages, art and island history

Tången is a traditional fishing village with the densely packed buildings typical of the archipelago. In Halsvik, well-preserved boatyards remain as visible traces of the historic maritime heyday. Byn is the oldest settlement on Styrsö and was formerly the island’s historic centre. In the second half of the 19th century, a seaside resort developed in Bratten with bathhouses, a restaurant, a hotel and summer houses. The villages therefore represent different historical aspects of Styrsö: fishing, seafaring, settlement history and bathing culture.

The cultural side includes the Styrsö Art Tour, which has been held annually since 2008. Local artists from Styrsö and Donsö exhibit their works there. Öbergska House dates from 1812; the Öbergska Gallery is located on the second floor of the house on Styrsö. Styrsö Church is closest to the Styrsö Bratten stop and can serve as another point of reference when finding your way between the stop and cultural attractions.

Getting there and choosing where to stay

Styrsö is served year-round by Styrsöbolaget’s public transport boats. The entire Stenpiren–Styrsö–Donsö–Vrångö boat route takes approximately 1 hour and 35 minutes. For maritime orientation in good visibility: the coastal fairway in the southern archipelago is entered from the south on a course of 012° via the Matskär–Stora Rös leading line on the island of Styrsö. When choosing a holiday apartment, it is therefore worthwhile to consider proximity to the stops mentioned and your preferred natural or cultural attractions separately, rather than treating the island as a single location.

For further destinations in the surrounding area, you can also compare Donsö, Fiskebäck, Hjuvik, Gothenburg, Säve, Nödinge, Hisings Kärra and Torslanda.
