Gothenburg between the archipelago, nature and culture

To the east of Gothenburg lies the Delsjöområdet, a recreational area covering approximately 1,370 hectares. Its lakes and ponds are home to a diverse range of birdlife. The Rya skog nature reserve also combines nature with history: lush deciduous trees, winding paths and open clearings suitable for picnics characterize the area. It is also home to historic remains of a fortification wall dating from the 17th century.

Nature

The Gothenburg Botanical Garden is home to 20,000 plant species from more than 130 countries. Its arboretum covers 55 hectares. In Gothenburg's Rosarium, several thousand colourful, fragrant roses fill the grounds in summer. Japandalen offers a special garden atmosphere with its peaceful surroundings and understated, Zen-inspired design.

Slottsskogen offers a diverse range of plant and animal life, large meadows for picnics and numerous walking paths. Slottsskogens djurpark zoo is open year-round and free to access; it focuses on tame and wild Nordic animals. At Barnens zoo, visitors can see Swedish farm animals in an enclosure, while children can ride Gotland ponies.

The Välen nature reserve comprises grazed coastal meadows, marine soft sediments and noble deciduous woodland. It also features walking and cycling paths, rest and barbecue areas, and a birdwatching tower. Vättlefjäll is a recreational area near Gothenburg characterized by coniferous forest and lakes, with several hiking trails. Several lakes there are used for swimming, paddling and fishing; Vättlefjällsleden is an approximately 25-kilometre circular hiking trail. Gothenburg also offers walking paths close to the city, multi-day hiking trails and many tours accessible by public transport. Different trail lengths and types of activities make it easier to plan your own excursions.

Culture and history

The collection of Göteborgs konstmuseum covers art from the 15th century to the present day, with a focus on Nordic art. Göteborgs stadsmuseum displays the Äskekärrskeppet, Sweden's only preserved and exhibited Viking ship. The exhibition “Göteborgs födelse” provides insights into everyday life in the 17th century and the city's rise to become a leading trading metropolis.

The Aeroseum dedicates its exhibitions primarily to Cold War themes and other areas of aviation. Several flight simulators for aircraft and helicopters are available in the simulator hall. In its permanent exhibition “Inspiration Östasien”, the Röhsska museet explores the encounter between Nordic and East Asian arts and crafts and also incorporates contemporary design. “Designhistorier” presents more than 500 objects from the museum collection and covers design from the late 19th century to the present day.

Trädgårdsföreningen is one of the best-preserved 19th-century parks in Europe. Palmhuset, an elegant greenhouse dating from 1878, is home to palms and other tropical plants.

Experiences

Liseberg combines rides and attractions, games, music stages and a dance floor with several restaurants and dining options in a green park setting. Sjöfartsmuseet Akvariet offers talks on maritime affairs and the environment, as well as creative workshops with a marine theme. The museum is home to Europe's largest collection of living corals and a public marine research laboratory. In the aquarium, an underwater journey takes visitors to animals and fish from around the world. The Oceanen aquarium at Universeum features sharks and rays.

Islands and trails

The southern islands of the Gothenburg archipelago are car-free and accessible year-round by Styrsöbolaget boats. Ferries from Saltholmen usually run once an hour to the larger islands of the southern archipelago. For journeys in Gothenburg and Mölndal, the Styr & Ställ bike-sharing system has more than 135 stations throughout the city.

Maritime character

Since 1874, Feskekörka has been a destination for fish and seafood as well as a distinctive Gothenburg building. As a market hall, it offers seafood and other delicacies, as well as several restaurants and bars. Following its reopening in spring 2024, the market hall is home to several fish and seafood restaurants.
