Holiday apartment in Köping: Culture, parks and the Romboleden

Köping takes you from historic museum buildings and workshops via Gamla stan to parks by the water and the Romboleden pilgrimage trail. Culture, urban history and natural landscapes come together here in a wide variety of ways.

Culture and history

Köpings Museum was founded in 1887 by the town of Köping on the initiative of ropemaker Per Alfred Dandernell. In 1972, the collections moved into a former brewery that had been built as a distillery in the 18th century. The museum also includes a malt house built in Köping in 1761, which now forms the eastern part of the museum building.

Nyströmska gårdens snickerimuseum preserves Köping’s only surviving ågård, a farm from the 17th century that served as a carpenter’s farm for three generations from 1870 onward. The workshop has been preserved with almost all of its equipment; the machines and tools can still be used. The Bil- och Teknikmuseet showcases another aspect of the town’s technology. It houses cars and motorcycles restored by Bertil and Curt from the 1910s to the 1930s, including Bugatti cars and the supercharged 1929 Mercedes-Benz SSK racing car. Around 50 other vehicles and technically interesting objects are displayed in period settings.

Köpings kyrka also combines architecture and historic art. The present church is the work of architect Nicodemus Tessin the Younger and was consecrated in 1706. Its furnishings include an altarpiece from northern Germany, probably made around 1520, and a sandstone baptismal font produced in central Sweden at the beginning of the 16th century. The Köping-Uttersberg-Riddarhyttans Järnvägsmuseiförening also presents an exhibition about the Köping-Uttersberg-Riddarhyttans järnväg railway. In Gamla stan, the historic town centre gives an impression of what Köping looked like before the great town fire. The Tingshuset courthouse was built by Theodor Dahl in 1893.

Nature and trails

Agda Östlunds park brings together a variety of open-air activities: The wheeled sports park is designed for scooters, skateboards, inline skates and wheelchair skateboards. There is also a nature discovery trail, three disc golf baskets and two stages for events and spontaneous activities. Nearby Köping, Malmön on Lake Mälaren has a sandy beach, changing rooms, a toilet, a barbecue area and a small playground.

The Åpromenaden runs across attractive wooden footbridges through Gamla stan, past the vicarage, Dammbron and Nyströmska gården. Nyckelbergsparken is located where Valstaån and Kölstaån meet to form the Köpingsån. A Japanese bridge connects the park with a bird island inhabited by many ducks. In Kvarnparken, a walking path follows the Kölstaån, where the river forms a small gorge with rapids and whirlpools.

Pilgrimage trail

The Romboleden begins in Köping and continues to the Norwegian border. The pilgrimage trail is 1,000 years old and consists of numerous sections with varying levels of difficulty. These include suitable stretches for beginners and experienced hikers.

Getting there and getting around

Both trains and buses stop at Köping railway station. The walk from the station to the town centre takes around seven to ten minutes. VL buses connect Köping with Kolsva, Västerås, Eskilstuna, Skinnskatteberg and Arboga. Bicycles, children’s bicycles and a bicycle trailer for children can be rented at the station. Those travelling by car can reach Köping via the E18 between Stockholm and Oslo; two exits lead to the centre of Köping.
