Bråfors Bergmansby is one of Sweden’s oldest mining villages. Iron production began there as early as the 13th century, and the village is protected. The remains of the ironworks and a canal built to harness hydropower have been preserved. At Nya Lapphyttan, you can see a true-to-scale reconstruction of a complete medieval iron smelting site discovered near Olsbenning in Norberg Municipality. Visitors can walk through the reconstructed site and among the grey log buildings. Nya Lapphyttan is also home to Sweden’s only reconstructed medieval blast furnace.
The Norbergs gruvmuseum provides further insights into the region: It combines traditional museum exhibits with preserved mining environments in several buildings. Built in 1876, Polhemshjulet drove the pumps in the mines via a rod system. With a diameter of 15 metres, it is one of Sweden’s largest preserved waterwheels. Karlbergs hembygdsgård includes a bakehouse, a poorhouse, a trading room, a carriage shed and a miner’s farmstead. At Elsa Andersons Konditori, baked goods have been the focus since 1916.
Trails, mining fields and peaceful nature experiences
In the protected mining area of Klackberg, winding paths and steps lead to mine shafts, viewpoints and a tunnel through the rock. Nearby is Blå Grottan, the opening of a partially collapsed mining tunnel, whose intensely blue water defines the character of the site. Svinryggen offers an approximately 500-metre-long trail over a ridge with views of open-pit mines and mine workings. Several old mine pits there were created by fire-setting, a method in which the rock was heated and blasted apart for ore extraction. During the hike, Svinryggen also offers a digital audio guide to the history of the site.
For longer routes, Bruksleden is an interesting option. It runs from Västerås in the south to Avesta and Malingsbo in the north, is approximately 250 kilometres long and is divided into 27 stages of varying length and difficulty. Forests, lakes and cultural landscapes alternate along the route. Norbergsleden is signposted as a marked circular trail in both directions. In the Komossen Nature Reserve, you will find a small marsh with old pines and various moss species; there are good chances of seeing and hearing different birds there. From the information board by the road, a small path leads to the stream along the eastern boundary of the reserve.
Winter sports and mountain biking days
Norberg offers both downhill skiing and cross-country ski trails. Klackbergsbacken has two downhill runs and a lift; the facility also includes a warming hut and a barbecue area. During the snow-free season, the marked EngelbrektsTuren MTB mountain-bike route adds to the range of activities. It passes through Norberg’s varied natural surroundings, is open year-round and starts at the Centralskolan car park.
You can also combine your journey with regional transport services: The Engelberg-Norberg Railway Historical Association operates tourist railbus services between Ängelsberg and Kärrgruvan. Bus 500 connects Norberg bus station with the nearby Avesta Krylbo and Fagersta C railway stations. When planning your trip, you can therefore combine the focus of your days as you wish – for example mining history, marked trails, wildlife observation or winter activities – and then choose the right holiday apartment in Norberg.
