Åskilje combines its location on the E12 between Lycksele and Storuman with an impressive river landscape, a distinctive architectural history and ski trails operated by local associations. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home can plan their stay according to the desired type of trip: nature, fly-fishing, local history or winter activities can take centre stage. This combination offers several starting points for planning each day, especially for families with different interests.

River landscape between the E12 and the Umeälven

The Juktån rises in the mountains between Tärnaby and Ammarnäs, in Lake Överst-Juktan. It then flows southeast until it reaches its confluence with the Umeälven near Åskilje. At Åskilje, two waterways therefore meet within a clearly defined landscape setting. The Juktån is also considered a classic fly-fishing river. Those interested in rivers, fishing traditions or expansive landscapes will find a special focus for their travel planning here.

The transport connections are also important for finding your way around the area. Åskilje is located on the E12 between Lycksele and Storuman. Buberget Nature Reserve is situated near Åskilje and can be reached from the E12 at Åskilje.

Åskilje Church and its architectural history

One of the village’s cultural landmarks is Åskilje Church. Construction began in 1925, it was completed in 1927–1928, and it was inaugurated in 1928. The church was originally designed as a simple chapel, with a rectangular nave, a lower and narrower entrance building to the northwest, and a small sacristy to the east.

The building’s history continued later. In 1936, a bell tower was added to Åskilje Church in the northwest after the entrance building had been demolished. The plans were drawn up by architect Einar Lundberg from the Swedish building administration. For travellers interested in regional architecture, this sequence makes the building’s development particularly easy to understand. Åskilje Church thus complements the nature-related attractions with a clear historical focus.

Nature, winter and regional orientation

Åskilje has ski trails operated by local associations. This adds another reason to visit alongside the river landscape and cultural attractions. Depending on the season and your personal interests, you can set different priorities: nature and water for a landscape-focused trip, Åskilje Church for a culture-oriented stay, or the ski trails for winter days.

As a local accommodation option, Åskilje Camping & lodge has 34 powered camping pitches. For the wider regional area, the tourist information office for the eastern area from Åskilje to Umnäs is located at Storumans Camping. This information can complement your search for a holiday apartment or holiday home if you would like to combine Åskilje with destinations in the surrounding area. What matters most is which focus determines your trip and which location best suits your own plans.

Further destinations for planning your trip

If you would like to compare other destinations in addition to Åskilje, you can extend your search to Gunnarn, Slussfors, Grannäs, Storuman, Tärnaby and Hemavan.
