Holiday accommodation in Storuman – Nature, trails and winter

Storuman combines mountain, forest and lake landscapes with opportunities for year-round outdoor activities in summer and winter. Between shorelines, boardwalks, viewpoints, Sámi cultural landscapes and historic buildings, the area reveals itself in many different facets.

Nature and trails

Along the shore of Luspviken, where Storuman is situated, the waterfront promenade partly runs through the forest on boardwalks. Kyrkstigen is easy to walk in summer, is partly covered with boardwalks and is six kilometres long. It leads from Storuman to Stensele Church, but is not accessible. A simple walking path on the north side of Gunnarbäcken is also well suited to cross-country cycling.

The three easily accessible viewpoints Kyrkberget, Forsviksberget and Utsikten are located in the immediate surroundings of Storuman. Maps and information are available, and a guided tour is also offered through the hotel. The old bridge in Stensele lies along the former route of Vilhelminavägen and is a birdwatching site on the Umeälven. It is especially worth stopping at from April to May.

Naturum Vindelfjällen in Hemavan provides information about hiking trails, guided tours, exhibitions, maps and souvenirs. Drottningleden is a nine-kilometre-long, relatively easy hiking trail between Laisaliden and Hemavan, offering views of Norwegian peaks and glaciers.

Winter

Two illuminated ski trails, four and six kilometres long, start at Storuman’s ski stadium. In total, there are around 14 kilometres of groomed, illuminated ski trails at Stenseleberget between Storuman and Stensele. In late winter, the winter trail along the Uman follows the edge of the frozen lake and runs from Storuman approximately 13 kilometres towards Laisbäck.

Umanbacken has three downhill runs, a lift and a children’s slope. In addition to the ski trails, this provides downhill skiing options within the local winter landscape.

Water and leisure

In Storuman Municipality, more than 2,400 lakes and the Umeälven offer numerous opportunities for fishing all year round. In Storuman Lapland, you can fish independently or hire a fishing guide.

The bathing area has a diving tower, seating and a circular route of around one kilometre. There is also beach volleyball, disc golf, an outdoor gym, a boules court and an accessible ramp.

Culture and history

Stensele Church is one of Sweden’s largest wooden churches and is known as “Lappmarkens Cathedral”. Atoklimpen is a Sámi cultural landscape that shows how reindeer-herding nomadic communities have used the landscape from prehistoric times to the present day. There is a circular trail of just under nine kilometres with several information boards, as well as an accessible rest area by Atostugan at Risbäcken.

Järnvägshotellet in Storuman is the best-preserved railway hotel in the district. The façades facing the railway grounds are still in the condition they were in during the 1930s. The building was converted into a library in 1979. The dining rooms, staircase hall and corridors of the former railway hotel remain unchanged; some furniture from the hotel era is also still there. A guided tour of the building can be booked, or you can explore its history independently using written information.

Hembygdsgården on Luspholmarna comprises a museum with older local objects, as well as historic buildings maintained by the local heritage association. The museum in Umnäs presents Sámi culture and settler culture, a school museum exhibition and old photographs. It is located in the village’s old school, built in 1905, and primarily displays objects from the surrounding area.

Seasonal highlights include a fika offering in a special setting, with locally produced items including toffee and toffee sauce. It is open in summer and at certain times during winter.

Getting there and regional connections

The Inlandsbanan train stops in the centre of Storuman. Activities, restaurants, nature, hotels and a campsite are all within walking distance. The E12, also known as Blå vägen, runs from Umeå along the Umeälven via Storuman and Hemavan-Tärnaby, continuing to Mo i Rana and Nesna on the Atlantic coast.
