Risbäck – Wooden Church, Local Heritage and Lake Landscape
Accommodation in Risbäck
Risbäck combines an impressive wooden church with regional history, a lake landscape and nature-oriented discoveries. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment can consider the village as a starting point for a range of interests: church architecture and local heritage are just as central as fishing waters, barbecue areas and nature reserves in the surrounding area.
Risbäck Church and the History of the Village
A prominent destination is Risbäck Church. The church was built in 1858–1859 by twelve farmers from the parish; the plans were drawn up by the Crown Bailiff Eleazar Rehn. The building is considered an example of late Neoclassical wooden architecture. This makes the region’s architectural and ecclesiastical history tangible through a specific building.
The cemetery also tells the story of the development of the church village. It was surveyed as early as 1850 and apparently was not put into use until 1859, when the church was completed. The wooden church stands on the northern shore of Arksjön. The church and cemetery are located on a rise that slopes down towards Stor-Arksjön to the west and southwest. The cemetery offers an exceptionally appealing view of Stor-Arksjön. Those who enjoy combining historic places with a distinctive landscape will find a special focus for their travel plans here.
Local Heritage Area with Historic Buildings
Risbäck’s local heritage area is located opposite the church. The heritage area includes several historic buildings, including a parish cottage, a bakehouse, a smoke sauna, a storehouse, a church cottage and the large Kämpeslogen barn. The parish cottage was built in 1884 and later served as a primary school and museum. More than 400 everyday objects are displayed in the museum. Kämpeslogen was used, among other things, as a dance hall.
This collection makes the heritage area particularly interesting for travellers who do not want to visit just one individual building but are interested in earlier ways of life and work. Risbäck’s history goes back to the 1820s. Historically, the village primarily depended on agriculture and forestry. This provides a vivid insight into a rural past.
Lakes, Nature Reserves and Activities
There are numerous fishing waters around Risbäck. A fishing licence is required for fishing. In the wider regional area, Risbäck’s short-term fishing area includes several lakes, ponds and waterways in the Långseleån catchment area.
Risbäck also has peaceful barbecue areas at Kyrkudden and Majberget. The nearby Trollklinten Nature Reserve is located on the southwestern side of Stor-Arksjön. It features a steep mountain with well-preserved old-growth forest; among other trees, it is home to pine and spruce that are more than 300 years old. Oxfjället Nature Reserve lies 7 kilometres southwest of Risbäck. Both areas complement the cultural heart of the village with natural-history attractions.
