Dorotea: Lakeside Paths, Forests and Fascinating Local History
Accommodation in Dorotea
Dorotea combines varied trails, a rich birdlife and unusual insights into local history. Around Lake Bergvattensjön, you can experience the landscape along short trails, while museums, artworks and historic buildings provide additional highlights. For your holiday apartment or holiday home in Dorotea, you can therefore consider whether you would like to focus on relaxed lakeside paths, longer hikes, culture or winter activities.
Lakeside Paths and Forest Trails for Different Days
Sjöslingan is an easy, illuminated circular trail approximately 3.3 kilometres long around Lake Bergvattensjön, which is centrally located in Dorotea. The lake is known for its rich birdlife.
The Lakeside Walk in Dorotea can be completed entirely with a pushchair. Several fire pits provide opportunities for a break. This makes the trail a clearly described option for families travelling together and looking for a pushchair-friendly route. By contrast, Kullerbacksrundan features changing surfaces: it leads over a gravel fitness trail, through spruce forest and along a boardwalk through marshland. Along the way, there is a view over Dorotea before the trail descends to the local heritage area of Kullerbacken.
The trail to Lillbergsforsen also begins at Lake Bergvattensjön. It then branches off towards Lillbergsforsen and the Fjällån River. Prästhällan lies on the eastern side of Lake Bergvattensjön; the hill's original name is Oxhornsberget. If you would like to combine different landscape impressions, you will find various destinations and trail characteristics here, without all the routes having to be presented as one shared route.
Churches, Art and Rural History
Dorotea Church was designed by the architect Evert Milles. The church contains sculptures by Carl Milles; the cemetery chapel also houses the work “Nattvarden” by Björn Martinius. Behind Dorotea Church lies Hembygdsgården Kullerbacken, an open-air local heritage site with historic buildings. The oldest building dates from the late 18th century. The site includes, among other things, a hexagonal barn, a Sami kåta and a njalla storage hut. Several buildings house exhibitions featuring clothing, tools and objects from various professions and social groups.
Kyrkstigen is a reminder of a former connection: residents of Avaträsk once used it to reach the church in Dorotea. Today, the trail begins at a barbecue area at the entrance to Avaträsk and ends at Kullerbacken in Dorotea; it can be walked in both directions. There are two shelters along Kyrkstigen. Dorotea is also home to four of the 13 artworks along Konstvägen Sju Älvar.
Museums and Culture in Changing Weather
The Caravan Museum traces the development of the caravan from the third model ever produced to models from the 1990s. Caravan production was moved to Dorotea after a fire at the original factory in Junsele. The museum is located on European route E45 on the eastern side of Dorotea. Dorotea Library offers a different perspective on local culture: the building is designed like an open book and hosts exhibitions and cultural events. It houses, among other things, Helmer Grundström's book collection and original paintings by Anna-Lisa Grundström. For a sporting addition, the swimming hall in Medborgarhuset has a 25-metre pool and a diving board.
Winter Alternatives
In winter, you can also choose between different trails. The cross-country ski trails at Björnvallen include illuminated forest sections 800 metres and 1.5 kilometres long, with gentle inclines. The 5-kilometre trail at Björnvallen is groomed for the classic style during the day, runs through forest terrain, has steep inclines and is not recommended for beginners. Bergvattensjöns elljusspår is an illuminated, gently undulating forest trail approximately 3.3 kilometres long. These differences help you tailor your accommodation and travel plans to your desired activity level, without treating the trails as broadly equivalent.
If you would like to extend your trip beyond Dorotea, you can also explore Svanabyn and the other places Borgafjäll, Risbäck. This keeps your choice of holiday apartment or holiday home focused on the desired combination of nature, culture and winter experiences.
