Borgafjäll combines striking mountain landscapes, extensive hiking trails and cultural traces of Sámi history. When planning your trip, it is worth deciding first what you would like to focus on: Would you like to experience a longer ski and hiking route, explore the landscape around Lake Borgasjön, visit special viewpoints or learn more about Sámi seasonal settlements? An apartment or holiday home in Borgafjäll can then serve as your search focus if you want to choose your accommodation based on the experiences you have planned.

Hiking trails between mountains, forests and water

The Storfallet Trail begins at the waterworks in Borgafjäll and ends at Storfallet. This gives the route a clearly named destination and allows it to be included as a separate excursion in your daily plans. Another defining connection is the Lapplandsleden. The 19 Swedish mile ski and hiking route connects Borgafjäll and Hemavan. One starting point is in Borgafjäll, where the southern boundary of the region of Lapland runs.

On the Lapplandsleden, hikers and skiers cross Korpådalen in the Norra Borgafjällen Nature Reserve. Those who want to compare different types of landscape will find another option in the Lillfjällsleden: it leads across the bare mountain plateau, along Lake Borgasjön and through old-growth forest and mountain birch forest.

Borgahällan and views of the mountain landscape

Borgahällan lies on the southern side of Lake Borgasjön. At 1,149 m, the mountain peak is one of the most distinctive in the Borgafjäll area; its almost vertical rock face is 700 m high. A marked hiking trail to Borgahällan begins at Borgadammen. From Borgahällan, there are views of the village of Borgafjäll and Klöverfjället. This combination of a distinctive destination, a designated starting point and views across the landscape makes the mountain a particularly memorable focus for planning your excursions.

Nature experiences above and below the water

Many fishing waters around Borgafjäll can be reached via snowmobile trails. Restricted areas must be observed. If you plan to include fishing as part of your stay, taking this into account is therefore an important part of responsible preparation. An unusual addition is mountain snorkelling: in Borgafjäll, guided tours take place below the surface of a lake or river in Swedish Lapland. This means that, alongside hiking and ski trails, water-based experiences are also available.

Sámi history and special cultural sites

The cultural side of Borgafjäll includes Sutme Sameviste and Storviken. Sutme Sameviste has been inhabited for at least 200 years and served as a summer and autumn settlement for Sámi from Borgafjäll and Storjola. Storviken is an old Sámi summer camp where various types of buildings can be seen. Both places draw attention to the seasonal use of the landscape and complement active days with a historical and cultural focus.

Avasjö Chapel also provides an architectural accent. It was designed by Ralph Erskine and the architects Sören Wimmerström and Ulf Oelrik. The chapel is located on the main road on the right-hand side, a few hundred metres past the Borgafjäll Hotell when coming from the direction of Dorotea. For broader orientation, Konstvägen Sju Älvar is also interesting: the 35 Swedish mile-long art exhibition runs from Holmsund on the coast in the east to Borgafjäll in the southern Lapland mountain regions in the west.

Other places for orientation: Risbäck, Dorotea.
