Holiday apartment in Knivsta: Nature, Trails and Culture

A section of the Upplandsleden trail leads from Lunsentorpet to Knivsta through rocky woodland, pastureland and nature close to settlements. This marks the beginning of exploring the municipality along trails that connect a variety of landscapes.

Nature

The municipality of Knivsta has six nature reserves: Södra Lunsen, Trunsta-Gredelby hagar, Rickebasta alsumpskog, Moralundsskiftet, Kungshamn-Morga and Ängbyskogen. Gredelby hagar and Trunsta träsk combine a wetland with natural pasture kept open by grazing livestock and offer good opportunities for recreation. The Kungshamn-Morga nature reserve lies on Ekoln, a bay of Lake Mälaren, and includes grazed meadows, shore meadows and woodland.

Säbysjön is a shallow, reed-rich lake and is suitable for birdwatching. The Moralundsskiftet nature reserve comprises old, untouched mixed woodland of conifers. Numerous sturdy pine and spruce trees grow there, some up to 250 years old. Wetlands, open pastureland, shore landscapes and old woodland thus form a diverse landscape setting.

Trails and activities

The Upplandsleden section from Knivsta to Forsbyån starts on the east side of Knivsta railway station and ends at Forsbyån. It passes through open agricultural landscapes, spruce woodland, deciduous woodland and a shore landscape. A largely accessible walking path along the Knivstaån runs from Knivsta railway station through the centre to the Gredelby groves; accessible footpaths run along both sides of the stream for much of the way.

At the bike park in Knivsta, you can practise jumps and drops. The MTB route comprises around five kilometres of trail cycling, with both easy and challenging sections. Hittaut Knivsta is a free health and leisure activity in which checkpoints in four levels of difficulty are found using a map or app. The checkpoints are located in urban areas, parks, residential neighbourhoods and forests close to settlements.

The disc golf course in the outdoor area of CIK has nine holes, is free of charge and can be used without a reservation. On the western shore of the elongated bay of Valloxen near Knivsta, fishing from the shore in municipal waters is free for everyone. On Valloxen, skating loops are cleared every winter when weather conditions are suitable.

Culture and history

Several Mora Stones are displayed in a museum building erected in 1770 on the initiative of Gustav III at the present-day memorial site. The western part of Husby-Långhundra Church was built in the 12th century. The church also contains medieval lime paintings attributed stylistically to the Tierp school.

Broborg is considered the largest hillfort in Uppland. A path leads from the Broborg car park to the summit of the hill, from where there is a view over the Långhundraleden valley. Hönsgärde is an Iron Age burial ground with marked trails. Vallbyåsen is also an Iron Age burial ground, with more than 300 graves still visible. At the summit of Vallbyåsen, several standing stones now mark the parish boundary between Husby-Långhundra and Östuna.

The U463 runestone near Alasjön stands close to its original location and is well preserved. Noors träslott at Säbysjön is one of the few surviving Carolinian wooden manor houses in Sweden from the 17th century. The landscape therefore contains distinctive traces of various eras alongside its natural environment and cultural history.

Leisure destinations

Laggagrottan is a larger cavity formation among glacial erratic boulders in a small woodland area near Lagga. The site is considered an adventurous place for children, where they can climb among the rocks. Särstabadet has jetties, a diving tower, a barbecue area, an accessible bathing jetty and a bathing wheelchair.
